I was wondering if I can get,an opinion on the, difference between trampers and drivers who work days or nights.
My,experience as a day worker is that the transport operators try to utilise the day worker to the, same limits as trampers.
I can see why,its about getting the most out of the, worker.
There is a tendency to try and get the,3fifteen shift and the 2or 3 thirteen hour, shifts.
My point is that those hours are really for the trampers he / she can sleep in the, truck and so doesn’t have the extra time of travel to and from work.
The question id like to ask is does anyone think that a 12 hour maximum limit for none tramper drivers is a good idea.
Trampers can still do the maximum hours but none trampers could have a limit of 12 hour
in my experience none trampers inevitably work harder than trampers as the planners route the none tramper to return daily.

Yes a lower duty limit is overdue in my opinion.
the difference is:
one ends up becoming a jobsworth steering wheel attendant, the other usually stays the way a lorry driver should be,“grafter”.
Crap ideas. Next.
Doesn’t matter how often you start a thread - you are still spouting crap. HTH

Are you for real? I have never heard such nonsense, just because someone is tramping doesn’t mean they do nothing all day.
The already is its called the RTD working time.
The law is too complicated as it is so why make it worse?

They blew a big ■■■■ off hole in that with POA! I’m in favour of a reduction, long overdue.
Perhaps you should think of a career change, Ross. This industry is being dragged down already by political bs we don’t need anymore sixth form ideas getting onto the statute books.
Ross, watch Carry On At Your Convenience; You sound uncannily like the shop steward on there.
agree,should be a max 12 hr work limit…
I didn’t mean trampers do nothing.
I know tramping is hard, its a different, style, mostly long haul and from what I know, long periods of waiting.
Like,waiting several hours.
This doesn’t happen with none trampers.
I reckon trampers do loads of driving, and a lot of,waiting.
Day shift and, night shift is normally constant and back to base.
There is a fundamental difference.
Both jobs are hard and ,I just think none trampers should not work or be on duty more than 12 hours.
Oh and the working time directive doesn’t work.
But don’t start that one.
Drive safely.
Get lots of rest.
Be polite.
Crap is the eye of the beholder.
“want,a,wet,wipe”
agreed. No-one should have to work more than 12 hours
Agreed, but for all drivers.
We had a 12.5 hour max working day at one time if you recall, then we gained the EU rules and the tachograph and to make the job safer for all they upped it to a 15 hour day, brilliant.
a short time later they phased out the full secondary independent trailer braking system, the blue line, another own goal in the search for real safety.

Right so because your a tramper you wait around a lot more at delivery points
Because your a tramper u drive a lot more
As far as I no when u get to an Rdc or any delivery location they do not say ah you with the frilly curtains must be a tramper you can wait till all the day drivers have got unloaded
We are all drivers plane and simple and we all get held up at delivery points
As for doing long runs that used to be the case as the idea of having a nite out was plane and simply because you couldn’t complete the trip in a day
I generally find most firms now the trampers don’t really go much further than the day blokes its just instead of going home they tend to max there driving time out by say leaving in an evening with tomoros work and running a few hours up the road
Me persanaly if I was going home I’d want a min of 11 hours off
Where when I stay in my truck I’m quite happy to take 9 off
I agree the day / night drivers should work less hours but I think the op needs to tramp not all long waiting around trampers can molty drop to unless like me when you carry a box you have to wait some times
I agree
Its,a big industry with, loads of different aspects to the job.
The rdc work is another story of long queue and drivers luxury waiting rooms.
its bloody complicated really, what with day rates and hourly pay
and monthly.
I suppose salaried would be the best option.
That would eliminate problems with doing to many hours and the wages would even out.
I’m just commenting from the experience of working shifts where you return home every night.
I did a,bit if tramping. To be honest 20quid is to cheap.
Going back to trampers and none trampers.
There should be a limit of 12 hours maximum in,any day or night.
Based on drivers from the tipper driver to the van and any commercial driver who doesn’t sleep in a stationary vehicle equipped with sleeping facilities.
Is that to much to,ask.
A 12 hour maximum working day or night shift.(on duty) paid.
I mean common is that unreasonable.
Drive safely.
Remember only a fool breaks the 3 second rule.

Maybe it’s just me but I’m really struggling here, are you asking for opinions, advice, having a rant, or asking us to leave adequate space to the vehicle in front?
