Day 2 if c+e

Wow what a beast a brand new daf unit with a day out on road yesterday and today a day on the reversing area aced the reversing

Now where my question on the recouping how many times am I meant to stop upon approaching the trailer how many times should I get out and check unit and trailer position is one before touching trailer and one when fifth wheel flat is this right.

Tia guys

You should stop prior to making contact with the trailer in order to check the height compatibility. (I believe that this isn’t strictly necessary provided you can see from the mirrors - which you probably can). I always teach to stop, get out and have a look.

From there, no need to get out again.

Sounds like you’ve got a nice truck; presumably a good instructor to match who I am sure will be able to clear up any worries you have.

Hope this helps, Pete

Thank you so much peter that helps me massively yea turns out it’s all good so far considering my current company have booked and paid for this

I did do the stop and get out before contact all was good I then made contact and did tug test twice but was told I should have stopped once fifth wheel was flat before locking in[emoji848]

To achieve what? It makes sense if it was to raise the suspension but you haven’t mentioned that. Apart from that, I don’t get it.

Lol to make sure was in the v or mouth of fifth wheel and not going to jump over wheel

Unless you’re a mile out, the pin will find it’s way so nothing to think about there. Simply check that the mudwings are in line with the edge of the trailer. Not so easy with trailers apart from boxes and curtains.

How will it jump over the 5th wheel when you’ve just checked the height properly? In addition to this, if the suspension is used correctly, it virtually eliminates the possibility. But some trainers don’t teach this. (and, although it’s not a requirement for test, employers will take a dim view of bent trailer legs cos the suspension hasn’t been used.)

Stopping and checking is very good practice where it’s not easy to check otherwise. But no need on test (as its a box or curtain) but no problem either.

Much appreciated thank you so much peter [emoji1303]

That second check isn’t a bad habit to get into just before you slide in that last couple of feet, if you get into doing it carefully you will never ever miss the pin.

Think tankers and other specialist tackle, lining yourself up with a tank isn’t as easy as with a square fronted normal semi trailer unless, oddly enough, the tank is fitted with side guards, i’ve known of numerous missed pin episodes and every one has been by people not bothering to get out and have a bloody look, it takes seconds.

I’d rather get out and double check 4 times than have the pin slide up over the fifth wheel, its not just the unit lights and backs of cabs, with tanks you can easily damage the underside of the barrel if the fifth wheel is then raised, and damaged pressure vessel means £££££.

Watching some bugger who thinks he’s impressing people by reversing straight under on his mirrors alone, missing the pin by 6" and stoving the back of the cab in plus wrecking the unit rear lights isn’t actually as funny as it sounds, mind you watching mr clever ■■■■ who now doesn’t look or feel quite so cool when he’s filling in the forms red faced whilst the unimpressed are now taking the ■■■■ openly IS quite funny :smiling_imp:

I would. It’s the same principle as reversing. Always best to get out and check. But I would also have the confidence to not need the extra check on a box or curtain. Raising the suspension tells you the weight of the trailer is on the 5th wheel so it’s a clever pin that can now jump over it!

Pete

Its surprising though Pete, even after all my years, yes i can slip under my regular tank spot on every time (though still check the height unless i dropped it) but all tanks are slightly different, and despite the height being right, every now and again on a strange tank especially another make if i’d carried on regardless the pin could easily have slid up one side of the fifth wheel plate missing the jaws completely.

I’m always annoyed with meself thinking how the hell after donkeys years can i be so far out

As you rightly say a curtain or box is a different kettle of fish altogether.
