Nice one Dave, enjoyed that.

thanks everyone
i know its not the most prestigious of jobs , but i like it.
i had a good day today aswell, but i never took took the camera.

:open_mouth: Donā€™t know quite what you mean!

 Oh, i seeā€¦

:open_mouth: Thank you very much for enquiring about my bowel movements. But i feel this information is somewhat of a personal matterā€¦

flying_fenman:
enjoyed that dave - might have a go at one myself some time bud.

I thought that was you I saw the other night running around Peterborough Extra truck park with a camera - and now I know!

just found this buddy and then realised this is still the only diary i have done  (nearly 3 years old) and how many have you done since

nice read cheers, if you do another could you get some pics of how its all pumped in etc, never seen it before would be interested. i had an axor for a 3 week stint away, its not made for that but its ok for the odd night out, better than a premium i reckon

i will get on it.

i would,nt mind reading a diary from someone who moves the glass about in them funny trailers. i would like to see how they work.

Good diary mate,

dave:

wylie:
what is the difference between the axor and actros

different engines for a start. axors are straight six and actros v6.
hence why a 430 axor will out pull a 440 actros. straight six,s pull better than v6,s.

the axor cab is much narrower too, and no flat floor  .

gearboxes. you can get a telligent box in the axor as an extra but i dont think you can get the auto version. most axors ive seen apart from ours are fitted with a nine speed manual.

finall, the axors are built to a price (but getting better), they are aimed at distribution work as opposed to running all over europe. this is the actros,s job. some people say the that chassis ,s are identicle but i dont think they are.
in the wet a 3 axle axor slides about a fair bit but an actros does,nt.
i also suppose there is a big difference in price too.

Axors are more expensive like for like than an Actros as the Actros comes with 2yrs R&M.

You can get the new Powershift automated manual box in an Axor & it is VERY good.

Chassis is EXACTLY the same on Axor/Actros. Axor is lighter due to smaller cab & lighter engine, on multi wheeled rigids (8 wheelers to you) the Axor comes with single reduction drive axles, whereas the Actros has hub reduction jobbies.

Had a brochure for my breakfast  :astonished:

kinell mate , you did eat a brochure :open_mouth:
i knew all that, this thread is getting on a bit (like me). so ive learnt the pro,s and cons of the axor now

Do you know, Iā€™ve really enjoyed re-reading that?!

Yes, itā€™s about time you did another one!!

In answer to your question, er, one, two, three, four, five. So thatā€™d be FIVE then!!

Come on davey boy - sort it out.

I think we could use a diary forum, personally.

No I got sick of sitting in traffic jams so started selling Mercs for a living, hence the handle, not one of my better plans though as lead times are well into next year & itā€™s commission based, working a week in hand is one thing but 16 months :exclamation: :unamused:

Pointing an FH12 around now, but would rather have a Mega Space any day :sunglasses:

great idea :sunglasses:

Nice diary Dave. I notice an actros in your photo and wonder how much of a difference you reckon there is between it and an aquivelant axor on hills. Im sure youve had the opportunity to run with it, or maybe it has a less powerful engine.

only got two actros,s left now. both 400 manual telligents.
we did have plenty of 430 autos though and in my view the axor would leave the actros for dead on hills.
the 2 400,s that we have are well past there best but even when new they would be left for dead on hills by our old erf ec11s with 405 bhp.

Donā€™t wanna sound like a know it all, but I am  Before the selling thing I was a tester for TRUCK magazine & I covered the launch of the original Axor & I have to say it pulls like a train, The V6 in the Actros goes well but the Axor has a bit more driveability, never put the 2 against each other but I would doubt thereā€™s much in it, nowadays most lorries in the same power range use the same overall gearing & have pretty much the same torque characteristics, the Axor will feel faster though because itā€™s noisier :exclamation: The new one is a vast improvement on the old one though in almost every area apart from the driveline & IMO the manual box is better than Telligent, which is quite slow & always seems to pick a gear too low when you let it do its own thing.

The thing with Mercs is you either like em or you donā€™t :open_mouth:

I agree. I think they are very under-rated. I for one love them. :sunglasses:

If not the dealers. Or, at least the ones Iā€™ve been to. If you could buy Mercs from Scania agents, youā€™d be on to a winner!!

We used to pull jars of cooking sauces (heavy loads) out of Worksop back down south. Once over the roundabout at Markham Moor, thereā€™s a long drag uphill. This was a good test of a motor as we were all loaded to the same weight.

When running together I could have any of ours going up there in an Actros 2544. At the time we also had Scania R124-420s, MAN TGA 430s, DAF CF85.430s and Iveco Stralis 430s. Not one of them could keep up with the Actros when pulling up there off that roundabout.

I know the Merc had a bit more BHP, but it really left the others behind. It must be said, however, that the Iveco gave the Merc a good run for itā€™s money.

Itā€™s how you drive it. Thing with Actros is not to fanny about - give it some stick!!

Love the noise of the 12 litre V6 pulling hard at 1800rpm. You donā€™t need big stacks on an Actros for it to sound great.

Sadly it seems that the next generation will use an in-line engine though.

OMG I am a know it all

Do you mean Markham Moor or the one at the old Compass Cafe by the Downtown place

Used to have my own Stralisā€™s I had 540s but had ā€˜issuesā€™ with one & had a 430 as a replacement, it went VERY well, you could tell the difference but it didnā€™t feel like 110hp & the 540s would keep up with ANY Scania, the 620 wasnā€™t around then so before anyone saysā€¦

I did a test between the 43 Actos & the 124 420 at Euro 3, 2001 IIRC & the Merc put the Scania to shame in all areas, except it didnā€™t have a Scania badge :exclamation:

As for the next generation, thats in 2012 & will use a common engine platform with Freightliner in the USA, Merc in Europe & Mitsubishi Fuso in Asia, itā€™s in-line & will use SCR & EGR, first reports are that is the bow locks, but you didnā€™t hear it from me :smiling_imp: It was in Comical Motor a few wks ago anyway   They never heard it from me either

Talking of noise, thereā€™s a black edition 1861 going around with twin chimneys & that baby does sound nice :sunglasses:

newmercman:

Now youā€™re talking. If only my boss could understand that I really do need one of those for UK general!!
