Why would you even sit side by side to another truck through there?
Yes I know it’s allowed but it’s just silly.
Any idea what he’s run into the back of to cause the damage?
Is it allowed? I’m 99.9% sure lane 2 in both tunnels has a weight limit, if so Stobarts finest will be getting a bottom tickling from that picture.
The fact it’s a stobart lorry is Irrlivant the bloke was drivin wrecklessly but you see idiots like that all day long nowdays weather they be driving a blue green or pink lorry
And I don’t buy all this we all make mistakes he was in the wrong lane and probably driving to fast aswell I hope he gets done for careless drivin

The west bore tunnel (the one to the left as you clear the tolls) does indeed have a 7 1/2t limit. I think this is to stop vehicle’s bigger than a 7 1/2 tonner trying to squeeze past artics etc in the nearside lane as it is very tite. Altho this doesn’t stop some idiots trying to get past. Only the other day a maritime driver was clearly in a hurry so tore down the 7 1/2t lane nearly taking out ever truck mirror in the nearside lane, mine included. I think the east bore right hand lane has a 3 1/2t limit on it?.
That tunnel use to be two way so there is enough room for to lorrys to pass each other.

Yeah forgot about that one. But then again, lorrys were a lot narrower back when there was only the west bore. So maybe they had to impose that limit when the east tunnel opened and when hgvs got bigger and wider?. Its bloody tite when a puddle jumper passes artics in the west bore.
I have never had another truck pass me in either tunnel because if it is anything larger than a Transit coming up in right hand lane behind me I straddle the white line.
I do this in the S/B Blackwall as well.No one is taking my mirrors off.
I remember using the Dartford tunnel when it was the only tunnel , traffic both ways then later on the 2nd tunnel was built, then much later the bridge was built.

Lorries were 2.5 metres wide plus mirrors when the tunnel was two way but being retired for a few years now I am not sure what the max.width is nowadays
cheers Johnnie

They’ve gotta be a lot wider now, surely?. All i now is, after having a maritime wagon hurtle past me in the right hand lane of the west bore, he quickly put the brakes on, so must of scared him too, realising the tunnel isn’t that wide for 2 artics to pass each other.

When the tunnel was two way before the bridge got built - it was still one bore one way, the other back. The only tunnel in the whole southeast I remember being “two way” in the same bore was Rotherhithe tunnel, which I sweated getting a 600 through (along the pavement!) years ago.
I don’t recall Dartford Crossing shutting one of the bores habitually every night back in the old days either.
When there was only one tunnel, which is now the West bore, the roadway was wider as there was no walkway along the left hand side as there is now.
When the second tunnel was built the walkway was added the following year so making the road narrower.
The M25 did not exist then…

Before you enter any of them tunnels it reads clearly KEEP YOUR DISTANCE !
Education is a secret, but if you find your license with morning flakes nothing can help.
one of the comments in KM sums it right:
" There have been some good comments made here for both sides, but my main issue is the tailgating that lorries do. We hear so much about how it takes a lorry longer to stop, so why do they tailgate? They tailgate each other, they tailgate other cars and in some extreme cases, they tailgate to bully cars out the way. I often wonder how and why as they tailgate worse than cars, but the difference is cars can stop quicker.
I have heard they do this to save petrol, which in my mind makes the whole attitude even worse. As when they do this they are putting peoples lives at risk.
Another problem is that this does not tend to affect the idiot in the fast car, but more often than not the careful, or the elderly driver, the mother with children. These are the people at risk from this, which is why I consider them to be bullies."

This photo wasn’t taken by Chris Reeves. It was taken by me as I work on the tunnel and the bridge. It wasn’t four lorries at all, it was three lorries. The Stobart lorry tried to cut up the Laser Express lorry causing the Stobart lorry to jack knife and colliding with the laser express lorry. Therefore causing another artic lorry to collide into the back of the laser express lorry. That’s what really happened, don’t go believing people who wasn’t there and who certainly didn’t take the photo.

Up until few years ago the southbound blackwall tunnel used to be two way during the morning peak. They called it the tidal flow. They stopped it because stupid car drivers were overtaking in the face of the oncomming traffic.

From 1963 until about 1980, the Dartford Tunnel was just a single tunnel with two-way traffic. The second tunnel was opened in 1980, with the bridge added in 1991.
