The toll was to end in 2003, by which time the bridge and tunnel had been paid for, but was kept on by the Department for Transport (DfT) as a congestion charge.
The DfT said an independent report in 2001 showed that without charges, traffic would increase by 17.1%.
More than 7,700 people have put their names to an online petition against all charges on the route on the Prime Minister’s website.
The toll was supposed to be removed once the construction cost had been covered, instead of this happening the bridge has been sold to a French firm so the toll continues. The toll goes up again this month.
The government had the bridge paid for and then got the value again for the sale!

I don’t agree with the toll charges, especially the anomaly about trailers, 44 tonne artic cost 2.90 while a 44 tonne drawbar costs double that.
However the new charges are increasing to £3.70 for an HGV with a 50p discount for a dart tag according to the BBC
What many have missed is that the congestion would not be cleared without tolls, just moved further back as everyone fought to join the main carriageway from the A2, Dartford and Erith. There would also be no easy way of filtering hazardous goods and wide loads out either.
The tolls do need a few dual booths for the LHD trucks that do not have tags.
