Dangerous or not? Opinions

Drivers of all vehicles constantly prove that they pay little attention to their vehicles, their driving and their surroundings which is the main objection I have to auto lights. Couple them to permanently illuminated dashboards and IMO you have the perfect recipe for potential disaster.

I’ve lost count of the number of vehicles today who have appeared alongside me through my spray in todays monsoons with only front DRL’s illuminated.

Yes they bloom8ng are as muppets will drive in near white out conditions on just DRLs and no rear lights ,
I FING HATE THEM !

Mine are always on auto , if there not functioning properly that’s a manufacturing fault

Don’t want auto lights windscreen wipers or park brakes, quite happy with auto engagement of the exahust brake because otherwise the clowns would only use the footbrake and nothing else.

Nearly every vehicle i get in these days the lights are set to auto where fitted, on Scanias the gearbox set to performance mode which only serves to rev the ■■■■■■■■ off the engine for no gain whatsover and not make use of a Scanias decent low rev torque.
The one thing that possibly needs setting to auto on some trucks is the raising of the mid lift axle on an empty tractor unit, how many do you see struggling for grip on damp roads because the mid lift is taking weight off the drive axle :unamused: …one assessor even had the trainee lower the mid lift to try and stop the wheelspin being encountered on damp salty roads :open_mouth: the mind boggles.

The more automation there is the worse / summer drivers get.
As say auto on headlights people driving around no lights on. Same auto wipers
They rely on the car to do everything for them.
All new cars these days seem be automatic meaning even less to do just 2 pedals.
Cars park themselves yet again even less to do
Noticed in past year or so some cars have a triangle in the wing mirror. Warning them if there’s something alongside. Save them actually have a proper look. Oh no red triangle so must be safe to pull over.
Auto braking the lost goes on.
More gadgets and techymeans drivers do less which in my eyes is dangerous

‘Nuff said.

the ones that cant tell the difference between fog and spray and drive for mile after mile with their rear fog on are just as bad

Yeah, why don’t they have auto mode on fog lights?

Sorry…

Automatic lights haven’t been invented yet that work in fog!

My observations indicate that the colours of cars are conversely linked to the necessity for illumination, under the conditions in which they are driving.
Dark cars are the last to turn lights on in low light conditions, whereas white, silver and similar coloured cars fail to be aware of the camouflaging hue of their vehicles in adverse weather conditions.
Standout amongst drivers who have trouble knowing which lights to use when, are the boy racer types who upgrade their fog lights, then use them as a substitute for headlights.

This is a ‘pet hate’ of mine and I have mentioned it to some car owners who I know and in every case they were not aware that only the front lights were illuminated and why would they? Auto lights would suggest to most folk that both front and rear would be on, I guess the vehicle manual would explain it but who reads those!

Pete.

I think your getting confused with DRL’s old son, and not auto lights that put the front and rears on

Doesn’t help when your dashboard lights up anyway.
So people can see there Speedo etc so presume there lights are on.

Forgot to add , it don’t help that my MG 5 is default auto head lights from start up and have to turn the switch to turn it off or select normal type lights
One good thing is my rear lights are LED front side lights are the DRL unit lights but they dim a little

I have no…

Idea what light setting Jeeves uses when I’m nodding off in the back seat of the Bentley.

Whatever they are called they are still blooming dangerous in my opinion! :unamused: Coming down the M6 recently almost every vehicle that passed me in heavy rain only had the front lights illuminated and I bet most of them assumed they were lit at both ends.

IMHO the default for instrument illumination should be OFF. If its too dark to see the clocks then turn the lights on!

the big danger are these modern headlamps that dazzle oncomers.

But a lot of stuff is full Digi dash now

I use the auto light setting, our car has a ‘weather’ button fur when it’s foggy etc. But my FH5 doesn’t. My main gripe with the auto lights is when it doesn’t show you on the dash if it’s sidelights or headlights that are on, neither my truck or car do that, easy fix as both on full Digi dash.
