why does a daf auto have a 30min delay between gear changes?
That crap storage box that stops you from getting across the cab (day cab version)-no longer a problem, I had mine taken out
The annoying “gear too high” message and beep; Why does it not sound for moving off in 2nd when loaded, but does when moving off empty in 3rd?
Why is the cup holder behind the ■■■■■■■ handbrake
Why are the speakers made out of newspaper?
Why am I not allowed to have the rear fogs on unless I have the front ones on
Who designed the oil filler neck with a 1mm diameter, takes ages to fill up with oil
Ive got the CF problems include water in the sidelights and side indicators all had to be replaced for a new design which daf paid for. The ad-blu gets clogged up and you need to take it in for a clean. The nearside headlight bulb blows at lest once a month. Snow gets between the mudguard and carpet causing the mudguard to warp.
The ABS problem can be fixed if you switch off your ignition when connecting susies.
Touch wood its not broken down yet in 300,000kms but ive had nasty experiences of breaking down in dafs, forth road bridge and raith interchange being 2 of the worst
Automatic box is pish i use manual a lot.
The stell bumper is also a problem the stone chips will start to rust soon and it will look horrible, dont know how to stop this, anyone with any old wives tales that could stop rust forming?
EDDIE STOBART FAN:
I have often wondered why Stobarts have stopped buying DAFs.
DAF don’t have to give lorries away to keep market share like Scania do
When the 95 came out I preferred the Strato
Bikemonkey:
From the start of my driving career 7 years ago i’ve heard drivers go on about how great DAFs are, proper mans truck(apparently)they are so great blah blah blah.
I’ve driven Mercs,Scania’s,Volvo’s M.A.Ns and now i have a full time DUF!!!
im sorry but i dont rate them at all??,they pull well but thats about it,im sorry but they are total [zb],the finish is crap, interior dated after a couple of years the chassis and external parts look tatty, steering lock is crap, seat uncomfortable, dashboard and switches dated, stereo and speakers are complete PONY!!!..whereas other truck manufacturers are continually making improvements,DAF just stay the same apart from a few minor bits of trim??
i just cannot see the massive appeal of what is basically a turd on wheels!!!
i agree, the mirrors are not up to much, the door glass is in 2 pieces and that stupid bloody dial for gear selection on the auto’s, DUF is 100% right
i find them hard to fault apart from a few niggles.
get my old one back tommorrow (06 plate 340) as my new volvo fmx (420 i shift) is going to morrison utilities in essex on self drive hire for a month or so.just as the volvo was growing on me lol.it will be like a toilet inside if and when i get it back!!
i prefer the fixed seat in the daf as the air suspended versions bounce too much off road -as for the stereo, fitted my own kenwood head unit and six inch alpine speakers in the back wall and it sounds superb.these will be going back in first thing in the morning.
its done 400k so far (and only driven by someone else on a couple of occassions).only things to have gone wrong are an alternator last summer and a turbo last christmas.quite good considering the work it does.
losing this volvo, getting this cf back.
I can stand the poxy things I’ve driven a fair few 85s 85cf and the later cf 8 wheelers and they were all gutless as muckaway said they creek and bang no matter how easy you go on the tip.
As said elsewhere they get to about five years old and they seem to get very fragile.
The only good point I can come up with is the xf has a big bed and lots of space if you are away a lot.
I realise i’m in the minority on here, but i quite like them for the last 4 years i’ve had a 85cf 430 and more recently a 105xf 410 auto, and i find them really comfortable to sit in all day and i like the layout when i’m on a night out. Both of them pull really well when fully loaded and have stood up to some proper abuse when on sites (i’m not exactly ‘mechanically sympathetic’). The cf had it’s fair share of amber warnings to annoy me with, but then so did the actros i had at Salvesan’s! The old scania i used to drive was quieter and didn’t rattle, squeak or bang, but felt cramped and uncomfortable to sit in and the bunk was too low to get out of in the morning
I can understand the problems many of you have with Daf’s, but maybe it just comes down to whether the truck suits you and the way you drive/live in your vehicle. And how many amber warnings you can put up with…

Better than Iveco’s where you have to tilt the cab to put oil in.
I jumped in and answered this thread, but I was talking about the premium lorries, the 95 against the 3600. I haven’t driven a 105 but have done a bit in an XF.
A few good memories of a CF 430 though. I actually preferred the CF cab, especially the way the regular driver had it kitted out. It pulled well and the box was well run in so was smooth and comfortable for me.
I must admit that the interior’s not moved on much but as for basic in cab comfort, room and storage i couldn’t fault the XF95 430 i had for 18 months, infact i’d swap it for my R series 480 tomorrow.
FJ06 FBY. Miss ya babe x
we have two 18t daf LF’s one 08 and one 54 reg, and the rest are atego/axors 14/18tonners and i prefer the mercs hands down. i find the daf cabs are bloody awful-
cupholder is useless as its not deep enough,
auto box takes an age to change, flick it in reverse too quick and you end up in neutral, and floor it to pull onto a roundabout/ junction and youre sat there like a plank for 20 minutes waiting for the thing to actually move (unless you hold it on the handbrake and release while on full throttle!)
mirrors arent great and why are they not electric!!! and i dont like the way the bonnet mirror is placed right n the middle of the screen, prefer the merc mirror on the left side of the screen, better visibility
can not get a comfortable driving position and steering wheel does not have enough movement, and driver seat can not recline due to no space behind the seat
no room between the middle of the seat and dash to put your dinner bag! or anywhere else for that matter
cruise control buttons on the steering wheel - many times ive turned this on by mistake, feels wierd accelerating when you take you foot off the throttle to slow down!
door locks are fragile#
54 reg is starting to become quite unreliable
um think theres probably more!
i prefer the mercs yes we only have cheap lorries but i find the mercs more comfortable, better to drive and more reliable.
does it say anything about todays drivers that the first complaint is the cup holder
The Volvo cab isn’t much younger, I drove them in the mid 90’s and todays are very similar.

What are these ‘todays drivers’ that you speak of?
Cup holder not deep enough■■?
Auto box complaints■■?
No electric mirrors??
Adjustable steering column problems■■?
No room to put your “dinner bag” (lunch box?? )
Cruise control buttons in wrong place!!..CRUISE CONTROL!!!
I dont know how old you are or how long you have been driving but you sound like you are well and truly spoilt. Is that the worst you could find to moan about■■?
Its a truck FFS, a working machine…and you are supposed to be as truck driver, not a luxury car chauffeur
If these are the points that urk you the most then you would have hated some of the machines from times past.
Cruise control was a length of timber wedged between the accelerator and the bottom of the dash. Electric mirrors, adjustable steering columns, auto boxes ■■?
How about a …non air assisted clutch■■?
Great for giving your left leg a work out when driving through heavy, stop-start traffic!
And now cup holders!!!, WTF is that all about??

Thank ■■■■ we are not all cavemen hey
Times move on, people invent new stuff to make life easier, how can that be a bad thing? do you still expect me to power a lorry by sticking my feet thru a hole in floor and running for minimum wage

I started on a Bedford TK and they were quite modern at the time, synchromesh box, I think that was about all it had. Horrible thing to sleep in, the gear lever used to stick in my back.
