How exactly do you get them to work , the switch which in manual is down as the cross - axle lock switch ( I assume is diff lock ) just lights up for a second with a green light , then goes out ( so how do you know there on / off , I would of expected it to stay on green while diff locks are on ?) , I’ve tried it on various xg,s & they all seem the same , I asked a lad at services & he said push switch , when green light on there on , there’s a fault with yours , he showed me his & again his green light went immediately out .
I’ve tried pushing it in gear / neutral but no change , or am I barking completely up the wrong tree & there’s some electronic gizmo that decides when to put diff locks on or off .
Oh for the old days when everything was so simple !!
DAFs as most vehicles, cars included, come with ASR, an electronic system which uses ABS sensors to detect a spinning wheel it then backs off the throttle and applies the brakes to the spinning wheel. However a good old fashioned diff lock is now a paid for option on DAFs, Renaults too, I believe. So the first thing to find out is that the person who ordered your unit ticked the diff lock box.
Thankyou , you’ve answered my question , when I said in office I don’t think these diff locks are working , I was told they might not have them , I found that hard to believe but now knowing they can be specd without them I’d say they have been specd without them .
Roll on the summer , thanks .
Fitting a functioning switch to a unit without a difflock smacks of dealership incompetence. It should have been blanked off at birth!
On our new gen XF’S pressing the diff lock button the button icon turns red and a buzzer sounds whilst it is on I think from memory the other night. I’m in an old heap tonight so.
Reminds me of when back in the 70s I came back from injury leave to be given a brand new DAF. My first job was a heavy machine from not far away but the Econofreight yard at Leicester was on 2 levels and my low loader was on the bottom one.
Climbed in the shiny new motor and gingerly drove down the snow covered slope, hooked up the trailer but no way could I get back up again. Tried to engage difflocks to no avail 'till I was told it didn’t have them, just limited slip.
Took most of the morning clearing snow enough to get out of the place but I needn’t have been worried. Halfway to the loading point there was a cutting chock bang full of snow, so sat there for another hour while a council digger cleared it out.
I think diff-locks should be standard equipment on tractive units. I’ve got myself out of the cacka many a time on farms, building sites and snow-covered mountains with judicious use of the diff-lock.
Back in the days of Wilko I was cruising down the M42 when the diff lock alarm on the Scanny came on sling with the diff lock symbol on the dash.
Diff locks by two and a power divider (interaxle lock) has got me out of trouble more than once, you do have to sacrifice directional control, but usually maintain forward momentum.
