D Sharp&Son (Barnsley and Irlam)

Hi,

I am trying to find a Roy Fisher that was a driver in the Barnsley area and was wondering whether any of you that mentioned him above are still in contact with him at all? If so if you could please message me it would be appreciated.

image.jpgHere’s one of Sharp’s, best I can do I’m afraid. I hope your old man wasn’t responsible for this mess. Taken about 1980 at the New Island cafe on the eastbound A 580 ( East lancs road ) at Lane Head, Lowton. I’m fairly certain that they also operated out of the old cattle yard by the side of Wigan North Western station in the 1970’s.

Hi Eddie I printed those pics to show him.Got them off truckaccident thread. He reckons it was an Irlam driver who rolled that atki. The unit was based at Irlam then.Yes they did have a yard at Wigan.Sharps rented it before buying the yard at Irlam.Think its a big DIY store now Wickes or the like.Remember a pub over the road.Cant recall its name though.

The Derby Arms!!

That’s right mate, The Derby Arms. It was on the corner of Darlington St. and Chapel lane. I don’t have a good photograph of the place but I’ve found this old newspaper clipping. It would have been taken sometime in the late 70’s or early 80’s I would imagine, when they were in the process of demolishing all the old property in the area. A bit difficult to make out I know but that’s the pub on the corner next to the motor vehicle. All gone now of course, you would hardly recognise the place. The tall, modern looking building opposite is Brocol House, labour exchange and D.S.S. offices. That’s still there. The goods yard was at the back of that building. Your old man would probably recognise the area.

Cheers. Eddie.

Hi Chop, thanks for replying.I had a word about Clarkey with my Dad.When he had one of the MANs at Sharps he was pi!!ed up one night at Sharps old Wigan yard and slept in,missing a delivery.Sharpie fined him so Clarkey sold the spare wheel(the MANs had a spare wheel)to Browns to pay the fine!I will try to post some photos soon.Whos your Dad by the way?
