It would be great to get a thread going about D & M Cargill as there must be loads of stories to tell about the great Curly who,in my book, ranks as as one of the finest hauliers ever! He ran one of the cleanest best maintained fleets of ERF’s in existance during the years he was operating ( or the second best fleet to Bewick Transport as I would regularly tell him,as long he was at the other side of the chain link fence when I told him!!!) no “poncy” curtainsiders for this guy! only 40ft coilers and sheets and ropes,ISO locks on some!.I got to know him when I was about 19 and he was running two new D reg ERF’s with the ■■■■■■■ 180 engines. He used to be in our garage regularly, sometimes for a running repair if the “nit picking” ■■■■■ in the MOT station had failed one of his motors for something always very trivial!!But it saved him running miles back to Hackthorpe.I was only saddened that I missed his funeral but I have plenty of memories of him stretching back over many years.Right I’ve kicked the thread off now it’s up to the Gadgy’s around Penrith to join in! Cheers Bewick.

Yes it was in the years prior to their move onto Gillwilly estate in Penrith Larry, it had been a Texaco filling station on the A6 ( IIRC) there was a single bay workshop behind and Curly lived in the bungalow. He used to have his E type Jag parked in the showroom! and his motors parked on the forecourt facing whichever way they were loaded for—north or south!! Cheers Dennis.
