Some 20min ago border crossings Lanzhot (with SK) and Rozvadov (with D) were closed for goods vehicles - i.e. no goods vehicles are allowed to enter CZ (at these points).
Most of the country, incl. major artery D1, suffers from heavy snowfall - greatly reduced visibility and driving speed, accidents tailbacks etc. List of impassable roads and hills is endless.
The situation won’t certainly get better during the weekend - heavy snowfall is forecast for all country for night and all Sat, with strong winds on Sun.
any idea if this is due to purely the volume of snow, or do they not have the resources to cope, i appreciate the amount of snow, but am just wondering if they were prepared or preparing for it at all
It was the combination of snow and wind, at places they simply gave up on ploughing as the wind promptly blew all the snow back.
Declaring snow calamity enables authorities to focus on major roads and ignore the minor ones, ask farmers and construction companies to provide their equipment, call in people who are on holiday or after shift etc.
It used to be “normal” that first snow (in December) caught authorities and agencies unprepared but since then things changed. Responsibiliites are better defined, there’s a bit and better equipment, more reliable weather forecast and the media happily have a go at anyone failing his/her duties - so in terms of snow and its removal even CZ or SK are better than GB.

Anyway, things are better as now (Sun eve), most roads passable, black ice may appear at night and tomorrow morning.
