This small, but nevertheless tidy, E.R.F. 4 wheeler belongs to I. Thirlwall & Sons of Croglin , North ■■■■■■■■
The old-established family-owned business used to operate maroon-painted Albion cattle wagons , which frequently travelled over the A 686 Hartside Pass.
The E.R.F. is a sole reminder of the family`s proud heritage.
It carries restored tractors to vintage rallies during the year, advertising both the name " ■■■■■■■ " , and the
" David Brown " tractor logo on its travels.
Photographed at the ■■■■■■■ Steam Gathering , a couple of years ago.

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Stepping up in size from the E.R.F. 4 wheeler , is this DAF XF belonging to Williamson Bros. of Ulverston.
Photographed at the newly-opened M6 J36 Crooklands Auction Mart , last month.

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

You could have said it was “the ghost of ADB’s Beaver” L600 !!! Oh! and who’s the gadgy at the wheel ? Don’t answer that !! Cheers Dennis.

Hi Leyland 600 and Bewick,
Thanks for the photograph of Wigtons new Auction Mart. Is the ( now old ) Mart still open for Fridays Open Market ?

Here is something that might be of interest to any past/present hauliers and past/present drivers .

It is hoped that a gathering of transport-related people and vehicles of any size and age can gather on the Shap Fell A 6 Summit on Saturday March 9 th. at around 12. 30. for a special occasion.

The family of the late Gordon Baron is to gather there to inter Gordons ashes close to the A 6 Shap Memorial Stone` .
Gordon was very highly-respected in his dedication to the British Commercial Vehicle Museum in addition to the conception
of the Memorial Stone being placed on the A 6 Shap Summit.

Anyone with a older/newer commercial vehicle or bus/coach/van/car - even motorbibes - is asked to bring their vehicles to form a Gathering. to honour Gordon.
They can then follow the route northwards to Shap village afterwards. There is to be a display of Shap/A 6 - related photographs in the Hall for everyone to see. Many oldtimers can have the opportunity to recite their journeys and experiences of the pre-M 6 years. Bring a shovel and greatcoat !!

Hope to see you all there .

Regards,
cattle wagon man.

Hello CWM

Yes, the Water St market is still operating from the old auction site every Friday between 9.30am and 3pm

Also, Wigton now has a “Local” (Allerdales name for it) Friday Market on Water St Car Park, which useally has two to three stalls (with Allerdale running it, this figure is not likely to grow).

Kindest regards
CG

Hi ■■■■■■■■ Gill,
Thanks for the info. re: Wigton Markets at the two venues.

Have a drive down the old A 6 on Saturday morning , and through Shap.
Try to imagine the lorry - drivers - of - old on their way South before the construction of the M 6 ,
and then tackle the ascent of Shap Fell in your Fiat Punto. :arrow_right:
Youll experience a new high` in your life.

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

He sure would, I can remember the first time a went over Shap in 1957, Driving a Bedford A 5 4 wheeler with 7 Ton on its back 10 Ton Gross Eh, There was low cloud & it gave me an eerie sort of feeling, I was heading for Rutherglen at Glasgow loaded with soap powder from Thos, Hedleys in Trafford Park, There was quite a lot of movement of traffic, What with the Trunkers & the Fish Men from Aberdeen, Plus San Andersons AECs putting almost flames out of their exhausts going like trains, All long gone happy days & nights, & Stopping at Milburn Motors Cafe at Kingstown Carlisle for a bowl of pipping hot soup plus a wedge of thick crusty bread, Regards Larry.

Are you sure your not a “noted authour” Larry, hiding your “light under a bushel” ? I fancied (for a moment, until you put the motor back into gear on the ascent!)I was sat in the passenger seat of the Bedford ! Your description of that moment in time was priceless,it really was!! Anyhow Bonny Lad,I’ll get the soups in,I got my pocket money before we left Kendal eh!,Now then can I get a lift back on one of Sammy Andersons me Mam said I had to back for me tea on time !! Happy days,Cheers Dennis.

G. N. Glendinning is the name on this E.R.F., but Alan Glendinning`s name on the curtains of the semi-trailer.
Maybe someone can please shed some light as to the different owners , - both based in Penrith.
Photographed at T.D.G. yard, Carnforth ,about 8 or 9 ( ? ) years ago.
A clue to the year is the almost -new Scania R Series in the background belonging to Bob Brewer , Sedbergh .
This Scania was one of the first R Series to go into service in the north of England.

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

The old fashioned word was “Improver” “H” but I think that over your later years you’ve just got worse !! Cheers Dennis.

Regarding the nostalgia on Shap Summit and the good old days, no mention up to now has been made of Fred Tuer from Morland recent passing aged 93. I attended his funeral on Monday at Carlisle Crematorium where approximately 350 people attended. This was a very pleasant service with Tony Bingley a great pal of Fred’s giving a good address of his life which included quite a few amusing incidents. The cortege was preceded by Mark Douglas driving his Albion Chieftain painted in Tuers Motors livery. I knew Fred through my coach operators business where I found they were a very helpful company when one needed help or to reciprocate and help them out when the need arose. RIP Fred.

Hello CWM

N50 GNG was used by Mr Glendinning as a Stobart subbie truck (in Stobart’s livery) until 2002/03, when G M Glendinning decided to go it alone

New in September 2001
