Someone pointed out on another thread that Stobarts were the main hauliers in and out of ■■■■■■■ in the 70’s and 80’s this is wrong, the history of Stobart’s fleet size is

1980-82 10-12
1986 80
1990 250
1992 330
1997 1000
2003 (when Edward sold out) 700

In the late 70’s early 80’s the main hauliers in and out of ■■■■■■■ were:-

Bowater Scott:- Own fleet, T Brady, Barker (Lindale), Ashburner , ME Saunders
British Cellophane:- T Brady
Sovereign Chemical:- Shaws (Lindale)
Millom Quarry:- ME Saunders
Glaxo:- Own fleet

Henry Cook:- Bewick, Barker (Lindale),

AP Kendal:- Barker (Lindale),

British Gypsum:- Own fleet, Barnett & Graham, numerous small hauliers

Not too sure who Stobart hauled for, before he got into Metal Box. At this time Robson were in a league of their own and by far the largest and most respect haulier in ■■■■■■■ , as well as Metal Box and Thames Board they also hauled out of Carnation ( Dumfries ) BXL (Haltwhisle) Kimberly Clark (Prudhoe) plus various United Glass plants.

You should “clause” the your list with E & O E “george” certainly for the south ■■■■■■■■ list so I can assume the list for N. ■■■■■■■ will contain a similar number of errors. Cheers Dennis.

I suppose that not many people on here have heard of this man who passed away last year, He was one of the top hauliers in the Country.

Fully agree with, and echo your sentiments regarding George Flenley ! He was origionally an ex BRS/nationalisation guy from S. Lancs,Merseyside area who joined Robsons in the 1950’s and Stan appointed him M.D. of RBT and it was George that was ,I understand, the real driving force to Robsons growth through the 50’s/ 60’s and into the 70’s.I met him on a number of occaisions and found him a decent bloke to talk to although at the time there was quite an age difference !!! Cheers Bewick.

 good list george but when i worked for jazzer he had tippers in eskett, arthur carr drove one alan sharpe the other, arthur came from i think(harry eland) from bigrigg, but i could have the wrong name there, and a van on marchon full time as well as the flats in there a few times a week,
note for cg apart from tripoly it was mostly detergents from marchon or see mcbrides, they had a portacabin at hawleys lane telling how they took off after getting the work from a & w, i remember seeing stobarts in marchon also, i just remembered j of g had a load a week sometimes 2 out of rowntrees, i will remember summat else after i log off

:open_mouth: i just did, pat hornsby from silloth, i still ache when i see that hanger

I seem to remember the BRS in Carlisle, just entering the town on the right up from the Golden Fleece,on the old A6,i remember fueling up there in the 60s early 70s but i have not heard any one talk about them being there on this thread, Vic.

I think London rd. depot closed in the 80’s, there’s shopping outlets there now .

Well I remember Robsons hauling Carnation Milk from General Milk Products at Dumfries, they used to run it down to Yorkshire & had something going with Campey Transport some sort of recipricol system.,also there was T,C.Brown, Intercity Transport, Hayton Coulthard, & Baxters that I worked for, Mandales Transport subed for Intercity, T.C.Brown & Robsons had one or two painted in Carnation Livery. I also recall one of TCs, Fodens caught fire on route to Aberdeen, & was written off & it was replaced with a Scammell, the driver was called Roy, that was 1967. One of Robsons lads a shunter Cliff Charlton lived at Brampton, I used to see him at Workington quite often at Siddick, I used to deliver sawdust to Sultra Ltd at Clay Flats they used to clean sheepskins, The Cally was also in the Carnation Factory. A long time ago was that all handball, they eventually palletised it, the forman a Carnation was called Jimmy Kay, he was a pheasant plucker but only on a good day, those were the good old days, Regards Larry

Thanks i thought they were there.

The BRS, depot was at Carlton I delivered soap powder there in the 50s/60s. from Thos Hedley [P&G] they had a good canteen run by one of their drivers. They used to do multi drop shop deliveries with the soap powder, Regards Larry

Hiya “george”,we ran out Bowater Scott for 13 years, Barkers never hauled out of Henry Cooke’s, Shaws hauled out of McBrides up until ESL took the traffic over. With regard to Libby’s Nelsons of Arnside and Kidds of Melling/Lancaster were also hauliers, and in latter years Bargh’s and Nelsons were dropped and the Libby traffic was shared between Bewicks and Kidds 75/25% respectively. Barnes and Nelsons did most of the work from MMB Kendal that the “in house” MMB fleet didn’t haul.Croppers had their own “in house” fleet that coped with the majority of their own tonnage but they did use one or two local hauliers periodically. Ourselves,B & N,Eric Briggs,J T Leyland. K.Shoes used Newby’s of Kendal and BR for deliveries of their shoes prior to building up their own van fleet. J. B. Hudson then K. Fell then Bewicks were only involved in the collections of shoe components and leather from the Midlands on behalf of a number of K suppliers as well as certain collections done directly for “K” Shoes.McGuffie Transport had a direct account with A & W as well as subcontracting for JWG Bass Lake.Athersmiths were also major hauliers out of Barrow prior to takeover by Brady’s in 1973.Their main customers had been Barrow Paper Mills and Cairds Iron Works. Cheers Dennis.

There was a driver called Willie Ferguson (Scotsman) who lived in Milnthorpe and he had a Carnation liveried ERF,he parked near the paper mill at Beetham. He was an Inter City driver based at their Leigh depot. He passed away around 1970 leaving a young family, one of the three daughters died very young as well. On a brighter note I gave his eldest daughter a job in my office in Milnthorpe,Willie origionally drove an ERF 4 wheeler for J. B. Hudson and when Athersmiths of Barrow bought out Hudsons haulage interests in 1960 he got a start with Inter City and drove for them until he died, nice bloke though we used to see him up and down the road when I was on Brady’s Octopus. Cheers Dennis.

I think they had two drivers lived at Beatock as well they used to park just off the 74 where you turned off for Dumfries, they may have been shunters but Im not sure, the two 8 wheeler Leylands were allways loaded for London, the loads were for a depot off Holloway Road south of Archway ?.. Regards Larry

When I was on Brady’s Octopus we stayed in digs at Llansamlet,Swansea more or less every Sunday night and often Monday as well. There was always two Caledonian Carnation AEC’s there and after they’ed tipped they would load tinplate back to Dumfries. There was always one of Robsons there as well and they called the driver Norman,he aways seemed to load for Ardeer.Cheers Dennis. Iv’e had second thoughts on this post,I think the Caledonian motors were Beavers not Mandators and Norman the Robson driver, who always had a new Foden used to load for Irvine in Scotland. Got to keep the record straight lads,Dennis.

Aye Dennis that would be when Carnation started to produce their own tins, they built a new plant at Dumfries on the left side of the site & the tins used to go overhead into the factory, the bloody noise was horrific, no ear plugs in those days. Regards Larry

I believe that Lawsons Haulage were involved with Hornsby’s Store Silloth if I am not mistaken they stored agricultural lime. I never knew that Stobart hauled out Marchon that explains where their lorries were going in West ■■■■■■■ the early 80’s before they hit the big time. Dennis some of what you mention was before my time!! I often wondered why you never hauled out of James Cropper.

In 1978 I came within a “hairs breadth” of taking over all Croppers haulage, their own fleet included, but at the 11th hour their non family MD couldn’t manage to finally convince the other 3 M D’s( who were all family !) They then started to renew their “long in the tooth” Seddon fleet with F10 Volvos. So it turned out a “bridge too far” for us but I was confident we could have done a lot better job for them,I even had Bibby’s deputy Chairman Geoffrey Thompson urging me on to get the Cropper traffic as it was compatible with the Henry Cooke buisness and at the time Bibby’s had a small shareholding in Croppers. Cheers Dennis.
