Hi ■■■■■■■ Gill,
I went to the ■■■■■■■ Truck Slide Show on Sat . night. A very good display of photographs was shown by
Nigel Scaife. Memories of long-gone ■■■■■■■■ haulage firms , along with up-to-date photos of modern trucks made it an interesting and enjoyable event . Thank you Nigel .
Where were you , ■■■■■■■ Gill ? Fletchertown isn`t very far away from Wigton. Or were you sampling the food at
Cockermouth Food Fair, and eaten too much ? ?
Cheers , cattle wagon man.
Has anyone put these on here yet.Cant remember if I have or not (not to worry )
Hello cattle wagon man,
No, I didn’t get to the Show or Cockermouth Food fair (put off by the prices of food at Kirkbride).
But Yes, the show is only just up the road for me.

P.S Stansfield, nobody has put that photo on (great by the way).
Does anyone know who it was that use to run 16 tonner ERF LV box vans in the 80’s and 90’s, they were light grey with a red band and no name. I’ve a feeling they were a small ■■■■■■■■ firm but seemed to do alot of work around the North West, I remember they did newspaper runs to the wholesalers at night.
Come on Dennis … I’m counting on ya to know this one !!
The only erf,s i know of belong to a publishing company in dundee, and they used to deliver paper,s and a well known comic beano

hiya,
Chris I used to dig in Lochee Dundee with a couple and he drove for Thompson’s we got round to talking wages and terms and conditions one evening and what a job Thompson’s was fantastic pay for the time (late 60s) and always top accomodation laid on when staying away from home his subsistence was equal to my pay packet.I believe GPO telephones really looked after their drivers as well, and those jobs were the ones everybody wanted but if any vacancies ever came up you would have been killed in the rush.
thanks harry long retired.

They were motors belonging to D.C. Thomson of Dundee ( same group as The Financial Times, Britania Airways that was,now called Thomsonfly) They mainly ran between Dundee and Manchester and the day men ran from Kendal south. Before they stopped running their own motors they did run 4 wheeler ERF’s but had been 100% ERF over prevoius years.I recall that they ran 8 wheeler flats at one time and because of security, and probably weather (it rained a lot in Kendal!) they were garaged overnight in Crabtree’s Garage on the south side of town. The later ERF 4 wheelers were fitted with low lift off Ali boxes and in later years after Crabtree’s packed up they parked outside in a yard on Farcross Bank opposite the Duke of ■■■■■■■■■■ pub on Shap road.Don’t know exactly when the job fizzled out but along with Charlie Alexander they did employ a number of drivers from the town over many years. Dennis.

Hello Bewick,
Can you tell me more about these lorries which you operated
■■■■■■■■ Gill
Hiya CG,the Iveco wasn’t a working fleet motor, although if it had been required (it never was!) the container could be lifted off and we had a 17 ton GVW 30ft flat! It only carried my Harness racing horses to places like N. Wales,York,Musselburgh,Lanark and Appleby and I was its only driver up until I sold it after 6 years and with only 14,000 miles on the clock! Now the two 111’s were a different matter! The one nearest on the shot was new onto the K. Fell fleet in 1979 and was driven by the late great Alf Bellamy until his retirement in late 1982,for those first 3 years it regularly did 3 round trips to the London area every week together with sometimes a Liverpool and back on the Friday afternoon!! Great motor and even greater driver!! The other 111 came around the same onto the Bewick Transport fleet and was driven from new by Duncan McMinn a Scotsman who lived in Kendal and a long serving Bewick driver. We eventually re-painted the Fell 111 and absorbed it into the Bewick fleet where it was finally based at our Rochdale depot as a local shunter.Hope this is a comprehensive enough summary for your very inquiring mind CG!!! Cheers Bewick.
This is a shot of the K. Fell 111 when fairly new exiting the depot one Friday night with Alf at the wheel and on his way home to Carnforth. His load looks like 20 ton of Libby tinned rice or milk which would be on it’s way south on the Sunday and on the doorstep Monday morning ready to tip! Alf would most likely be back in Milnthorpe Monday evening with a load of rice from Rotherhithe for Libby’s! Change trailers and be ready for a flyer Tuesday morning to London again!! Cheers Bewick.
Hello Bewick,
Thanks for that info. How many Scania 111’s did you run?
