A few of the old lads were out for a drink last week when we got on about some of the charactors we knew,
Can any of you lads remember a chap called Bob or Dennis or Dikie Clements who came from the Workington area in the seventies.
He drove an old Atki artic, and olso had the dog in the cab with him all the time,We gave him the nickname of black Bob,He use to load off Fergies at Blyth docks and run scotch,
It was once said he threatened to shoot the commisoner when he called to check his log sheets. He was a good man and always had a tale to tell us.
Olso someone who you have given a mention to before who we had great admiration for was the driver who drove for Daysons with the hook on one arm.He always roped and sheeted
his own loads sometimes reels 3 high and refused help.

Aye f. troop that would be Dennis Clemenstson from Blindcrake near Cockermouth and well acquainted with the commissioners. Cheers Leyland 600

I can remember that guy, the story I heard was, he was on the back of his unit leaning down doing some kind of repair, when someone moved it forward catching his arm around the propshaft, maybe somebody on here will know more about it than me.

Does anyone know much about Donnans of Whitehaven, are they still based there and what did they do? I have noticed that the photo of their lorry on this thread has Plymouth (not Whitehaven) on the trailer. They appear to be a similar type of business as Scott Trawlers.
This is a bit trivial, the Donnan family formed a lot of companies most of them registered in Northern Ireland:-
R.Donnan (Enterprises) Limited
R Donnan Enterprises Limited
R. Donnan Fish Selling Limited
R Donnan Shellfish Limited
W Donnan & Son Enterprises Limited
W. Donnan (Seafoods) Limited
S. & R. Donnan Seafoods Limited

I USED TO BE AN APPRENTICE FITTER FOR DONNANS IN THE MID 70,S, BACK THEN THEY HAD A FLEET OF AT LEAST 6,(MY MEMORY,S NOT TO GOOD) THEY RAN ATKINSON BORDERERS AND ONE MAN DIESEL, THERE WAS A TRUCK FOR EACH BOAT WHICH THEY WERE NAMED AFTER, I CAN ONLY REMEMBER 4. RADIENT LIGHT, RADIENT STAR, VALALLAH AND QUO VADIS. DONNAN HAD ORDERED A FLEET OF DAFS BUT WHEN THE DEMO WOULD,NT START ONE MORNING HE CANCELED THE ORDER, THEY ALSO HAD A LEYLAND LYNX. WE WERE SITED ON THE OLDQUAKER OATES SITE, HAPPY DAYS.

Nice shot of a Bewick International motor, the trailer is one of a batch of Fruehauf chassis,Grahams of Gildersome bodied 4mtr curtainsiders we ran.Bewick.

The family-owned haulage business is well-known for its grey-coloured cabs and easy to read signwriting.
However , this white-cabbed Mercedes is a breakaway from their traditional colours.
" Mazza " , the driver is photographed here as he has his snap , after loading at Holmescales
Quarry , near Kendal.
Cheers , cattle wagon man.

Holmescales, better known as Fraggle Rock due to being little more than a hole in the ground!

Always liked Saunder’s fleet, nice mix from 4 wheelers to bulk artics.
