Hi Lawrence, WHH 397 ERF 66GX with a Carmichael three compartment animal feed tanker operated by Carrs Flour Mills a wagon I have worked alongside throughout my involvement with road transport, I almost bought it at one time but was alerted to a cracked chassis at the time, however the old girl continued to provide sterling service for CFM then sold on to Sandy Masson of Abbey Town who ran it still delivering Carrs Farm Foods for a few more years until it was sold to our local fairground family. They removed the tank and sold it for scrap. Geof Breward now has the wagon restored as a tipper. This photograph hung in the mill transport offfice at Silloth for years. One of its former drivers is a good friend who went on to drive coaches for me after retiring. I always admired the Pattinsons blue livery ( a company taken over by Carr’s) It was then repainted into the company’s standard green livery.
Cheers, Leyland 600

Hiya L600…who was your mate if you don’mind me asking.
I remember some of them CFM/Ideal Farm food drivers when I used to go off with my Dad as a kid. Ronnie Wise, Bob Williamson, a guy called Duggie, Clive Kerr, Bert Jackson, Geoff Laidlaw, a guy named Oor Wullie and a guy who used to have a WW2 jeep he used to go to these WW2 conventions and had the full GI uniform, can’t recall his name. Do you remember Robert Ginger Bell in the traffic office, he was our next door neighbour at Silloth.
Btw do you remember the old Albion in the same blue livery with the square box bulker body.

Great info on the ERF L600,now for some serious questions, who would have supplied it new in what year ? and what spec was it? maybe 6LW/5spd DB /Kirkstall double drive ?Oh! I bet it didn’t have power steering Cheers Bewick.
Sorry to hear of all the bad luck Hodge, it gets us all at times.
Haven’t seen you or your trucks around for a bit now, although will keep my eyes open for the black one.
Hi Bewick, it was a 66GX model Gardner 150 with 5 speed David Brown box and double drive.
Rob Roy yes knew them all, Kenny Holt had the WW2 jeep and all the gear sadly he died suddenly from a heart condition, I remember being at a vintage rally at Carlisle racecourse circa 1977 when Kenny took part with his jeep, Allan McLeod who was WHH 397 's driver originally I think was also there. The Commentator at the rally explained thet Kenny’s jeep was one of thousands built for the Ameican forces during WW2, Alan drily commented, “Aye they all had two apiece " There are not many about now who remember Ginger Bell in the trafffic office and Henry Thompson keeping a strict eye on all that went on in the mill. Who was your dad ?
Bernie Henderson drove 397 for a while and came to drive for me when he retired from CFM.Duggie Beattie drove the Leyland 2 pedal Beaver Flour Tanker. Aye they were a good bunch of lads down at the Mill as were the weighbridge / bulk loading staff " Groovy” Bob Groves and David Wallace . Happy Days.
Cheers Leyland 600.
Today in Dingwall.
Oily
Harry Thompson with Snowball’s Leyland Steer !

Ten out of ten,go to the top of the class and give the pencils out
What size of fleet did Stampers run and what eventually happened to them,I seem to recall they ran cattle wagons at the same time as ADB ! Cheers Bewick.
Hi Dennis , et al ,
Aye , Im back from the long break . It wasn
t a one-roomed apartment , mebbe more like self-catering at times.
Now heres a mini-artic which Dennis could restart his driving career . It
s a (horrible , from my experience of owning one ) Dodge 50 . It was converted to a tractor unit , and used by Kangol
to transport their hat-making materials between their Cleator Moor factories.
Nowadays , it is used to transport a couple of Morris Minor 100- pick-ups to vintage rallies.
Cheers , cattle wagon man.

Yer wan’t nowt wid hanging about in’t Med “CWM” otherwise they might take you for one of them there illeaugal imergrant fellas eh! Anyhow nice to see you back mate ! Cheers Dennis,PS and starting to drive one of them Dodges is not for me ! so how did Colin Woodward manage to “stuff” one of those into your 'Owd Fella ?
Hi Dennis,
Aye , I got a bit of suntan , but I had to come home on the plane ,
cos them small boats were full of
those sort of folk who had listened to Tony Blairs
England Welcomes You All ` .
Mebbe theres still one or two non-migrating cuckoos who might want to
stick an oar into matters , but I
ll make allowance for their bitterness at achieving nowt.
The straight and honest answer to Colin Woodwards
sales technique, is that he
d sell sand to the Arabs !
The Dodge 50 was awful to drive , and worse to manoeuvre than an elephant in a telephone box.
At least the recon. Perkins 4.236 fitted by expertly Hudsons ( Douthwaites didn
t want to do the work ! ) ,
pushed out a bit more power .
Trusting you are keeping well , and ,…no,… I didnt bring a crate of Duty Free Spanish brandy back wi
me .
Cheers , cattle wagon man.

You are a “Star” Paul where do get shots like that one of the Great Curly !! Thats him to a “T” what a character, did you ever meet him? he maintained all his motors single handed and was an absolute Animal where maintanence was concerned but those ■■■■■■■■■ at the Milnthorpe MOT station used to delight in “knocking” one of Curly’s back (very occaisionally like) so he’d come into our workshop to sort it and then back into the station for a “pass”.He was a good Marra over the years but I was ■■■■■■ off that I missed his funeral at the time, the poor 'owd lad ended up living in a timber lodge near Penrith and had been dead for a number of days before they found him.I’ll not say what I really think but it really was a shame how he ended up though.Cheers Dennis.

His first base was at Hackthorpe on the A6 and was a Texaco filling station in front of what was Lowther saw mill,he had a 'lal workshop on the side and a small showroom on the fron’t where he kept his E Type and IIRC a “sit up and beg” Ford anglia?,his bungalow was at the side. This was in the 60’s and 70’s,he then ran Range Rovers when they came out,he used to come down to Kendal on Saturday nights with the “dragon” and have a meal at The Steak Bar on Milnthorpe road. When I first got to know him in the late 60’s he was running two “D” reg ERF units and coilers both with ■■■■■■■ 180 engines (I think) but one might have been a Gardner. He never allowed any ropes or tackle to be carried in the cab.The cabs where thoroughly cleaned and bulled up every weekend and you could eat your dinner off the chassis. His first motor had been an 8 wheeler in which he had a bad accident with,a load of rebar that came right through the headboard into the cab and speared his legs, what a mess his lower legs were ! but the bloke was as hard as nails and had his ups and downs over the years,he more-or-less sold up a couple of times and then bounced back again from two or three motors to running double figures.Great bloke, broke the mould after he was born ! Cheers Dennis.
