Hi Larry .
I just thought Id test the water` after the negative comments spoken about me ( by a few individuals) at the end of last year. Thanks for the welcome back , and the encouragement to post again.

Thanks , also for supplying the additional details of the Foden. I dont know of the Fodens current whereabouts , because it was advertised for sale a coupe of years ago.

Cheers , cattle wagon man.

I’ve pm’d you on Facebook a few pics of this cab as it is now… It’s amongst my pals ‘graveyard’ of Volvos Cargos and Commers
A good fabricator could repair the cab easy

Hi Bewick, just found some old BRS details stating that Claude Hughes trading as Hughes and Beattie of St Christophers Service Station, Carleton, Carlisle was taken over by BRS circa September 1948 which I presume became the Foden depot. I think Claude Hughes must have owned the adjoining land on which the much larger new BRS depot was built. I have only once ever been in the depot loading bags of milk powder sometime in the late 1960s can’t remember where for.
Cheers. Leyland 600

I remember seeing them about Carlisle and coming into Wigton auction in the 50s I guess. I recall following one through the bends on the A595 at Thursby heading towards Carlisle loaded with three decks of sheep leaning over so far I thought it was never going to right itself befoe the opposite bend had to be negotiated.

We’re they not called"the wasps or bees"? because of the yellow and brown colour’ s .they had a waggon with boxes under the body between the mudguards for carrying sheep. Jeh

We should have a thread titled “Hodges Diary” so come on Hodge(come clean!) tell us what lumber you’ve got into this week and what damage you have caused on some of the sites you’ve tipped at !! :open_mouth:      Bewick.

good god dennis where do you want me to start, because if I didn’t have bad luck I wouldn’t have any at all at the minute.ive got an 05 parked up with a cracked block just oil seeping out no water seemingly grahams have had 2 the same lately wont weld but I think weve found a 2nd hand engine.the y reg is parked up with a cracked and bent chassis the body is off ready to go and get jigged up in Lanark £5000 a lot to spend on an old wagon but its good otherwise had it from new.the only good news is the black irish wagon has gone on the road and its going well, apart from Tuesday in that bad wind when the lenses on the flashing roof beacon got blew off.the 62 reg ran over something sharp on a site in cockermouth and knackered 2 front tyres on Wednesday, the 11 reg has had a clutch in 3 weeks ago.but apart from that alls going well

Now then Hodge, when I was building the M6  (well the haul roads eh!)in 1968(what were you doing at that time :open_mouth: ) prior to me getting my first “A” licence I had a Trader on “B” licence and I ran out of Penningtons Quarry in Kendal(later Tarmac) with stone and Harrisons at Shap with dust.Well I was needing some new back tyres so I could afford to buy two one month and two the next,so far so good,so I’m running with two new Mich Remix on the near side and the two old ones on the offside.Guess what,I’m tipping a load of decent limestone stone one morning but Laings had been tipping rough blue/green slate from a quarry next door to the works and guess what BANG one of my new Mich Remix got slit from aerosol to breakfast time,■■■■■■ ! So I had to buy three new ones eh! So it was ■■■■ this tipper lark for a game of Cowboys !! Anyhow I sold the Trader for more than I’d paid for it and I got my “A” licence. However,I did enjoy running my L’al Trader as an owner driver but the crack was too dodgy for my liking, wear and tear is one thing but premature failure and abuse is not for me eh! Cheers Dennis.

Aye I thowt yu’d be running about a school yard somewhere in “Gods Country” wid a snotty nose and a lump of ginger cake in ya hand and pulling a wooden waggin on a bit of string in’t tother eh! Anyhow summat seemed to be amusing you on the shot, was that young teacher flashing summat at you Hodge ? Non of’t tuther l’al Marras were looking eh!.Tyres were very close to my heart but all our running was on tarmac so we allways got the best from them and from 1976 I had a full time tyre fitter who was just as keen as me,I stopped using Bandags at that time and the only remoulds I used was Re-Mix but from about the early 80’s I only bought new cases, mainly Bridgestone and Mich for the units and any new case for the trailers which as well as Mich and B’stone I bought Yokahama,Toyo and Goodyear then I sold the worn casings for decent money to a tyre dealer who was a good marra and he knew our tyres were well looked after during their time on the fleet. In the later years we were spending about £10,000 per month on tyres which I was always told was very low for the size of the fleet. One of the main reasons I went off remoulds was when the spray suppression rules came in because if you had a blow out the damage didn’t only stop at the loss of a tyre but it rove off the spray suppression kit, mudguard, flaps etc.Cheers Dennis.
