Rumour has it that Ectona Workington West ■■■■■■■ is about to close losing 150 jobs. Mark Thompson is the main haulier out of there.

You mean Eastman Chemicals in Sidduck? We delivered into there a few years ago, and I thought it was just about mothballed anyway?

Pinched this sad picture off the Welsh Border & Mid Wales thread.

Looks like the road collapsed at the edge. It reminded me of a story Dave Cooksey told me. (Dave’s Dad, Alan, owned Cooksey’s removals, who sold out to Blue Dart when they started carrying for Bowater Scott in Barrow) Bewick will remember them all.

After the buy out, David bought a 4 wheel van - Commer I think, and started pulling out of Bowaters for himself. He was heading up for Bowater’s Washington depot, in the days when you were allowed to go from Tebay to Brough on the A 685. Ironic really, since the road at that time was the original, winding alongside the hills out of Tebay, before they used the old pre Beeching railway line to build a nice new flat one, that now gives me so much enjoyment on my motorbike if I go across to Teesside.

At one really narrow point, he stopped to allow a loaded tipper coming the other way to pass. The other guy edged past him, and when the cabs were level, stopped to say hello.

They chatted for a few seconds. Suddenly, Dave said, the cab of the other lorry started to fall away from him. ‘I reached out to grab his cab, ridiculous in hindsight!’

The other truck rolled over a couple of times down the bank. Dave said the driver was unhurt but shaken up.

John.
