Hi Dennis, did you watch Border News the following night when there was a report on the moving of a 166 year old signalbox from Harry Fearon’s yard entrance alongside the A595 at Mealsgate to West Ave here in Wigton where it has been restored as a summer house. I have been past that old box hundreds of times all my life and now it has been re- erected about 300 yards frome my home. It served as a shop in the 50s and 60s where all the Mealsgate youth gathered to buy Arnison’s lemonade, sweets and cigarettes, run by a chap called Ike Blacklock, there was also a petrol pump at one time.
Cheers Leyland 600.

Hiya Gerald,■■■■ and blast it,but I don’t always watch Border News,or her that reads it with the “Vertical eyebrows”, although I was in and out of Harry’s yard a few times in the 70’s I can’t recall the signal box! There was a la’l similar shop in Ireby in the 50’s,Mrs. Lorimers,IIRC on the same terrace where the Stricklands lived, sold the same tackle,Pop,crisps,Mars bars etc.It looks like a nice preservasion job though, was Marra that bought it the last Signalman on the Mealsgate loop ? or he just had mare money than sense ! It’s a wonder Harry never used it as his Boardroom eh! Anyway, all the best for Christmas and the New Year to you and yours Gerald.Regards Dennis.

Dennis, I remember visiting some farming friends of my mothers who farmed at Upmanby just along the line from Baggrow, this was about 1953/4 they had just got a television set on which I saw the first prototype London Routemaster bus but I also saw through the window a steam loco and two or three wagons/vans heading for Meelsyat ! the only time I ever saw traffic on the line. Travelling in the reverse direction passengers would be heralded with porters shouting “Speytri lowp out” as the train pulled into the bay platform on Aspatria station (I thought I had better translate for our not so local trucknetters) This legendry exclaimation has stuck with Speytri folk for many years now. I dont think Harry ever used this entrance. A few years ago while delivering passengers from a wedding somewhere into the Fletchertown ? Mealsgate area late one Saturday night I asked a young lad if he wanted to be off near the railway bridge, he looked at me and virtually called me a liar exclaiming " There was nivver a railway at Meelsyat " drink talking I think. The man that bought it is I think the son of Geo Wilson a Wigton owner driver who ran a Guy Big J 4 wheeler with AEC 505 engine ex T Percival of Rockcliffe.

There is an interesting couple of motors behind the Big J,an 8 wheeler Invincible of Burnholme Transport,Penrith, and behind that a Dodge of David West from Dunfermline. Great shot from Carlise ? years ago ! Cheers Dennis.

As you say Dennis, evocative photo, must have been taken months if not weeks before the M6 opened. Thanks for the photo Leyland600.

Two great Guys - always thought the Invincibles looked the Dog’s B******s, remember Burnholme as green, maybe wrong. Liked the Invincibles pulling the huge London Carriers 40’ vans, with the tiny, understated logo in the centre of the trailer.

The opposite of London Carriers was an Irish outfit. Used to see them on the M6. The whole of the trailer was taken up with the logo SHENANDOAH. Thought they looked great too.

Don’t remember seeing many of your motors north of Kendal. Did you do much Scotch?

John

Hiya John,we never did hardly any Scotch in the early years but as time went on we did start to deliver a lot of paper to Dundee,Kirriemuir and Aberdeen as well as Glasgow and as luck would have it we started getting pulp shipments into Montrose and Grangemouth which gave us continuous traffic back to Milnthorpe the surplus of which we subbed to haulier friends ! Cheers Dennis.

Ah, I was probably in Saudi by the time you were doing the Scotch. Don’t think ‘luck’ ever entered into it Dennis - I think you were a skilled negotiator who always offered the best deal to the correct person!

It must have p****d off the old established hauliers to have to ‘sub’ from you - not mentioning any names!

Back in July some discussion was made of Harry Bragg the livestock haulier from Beckfoot, and also the Carlisle coach and body building firm of R. Hind at Durranhill. In this weeks ■■■■■■■■■■ News there is an obituary report on the death of Bobby Nicholson, Hind’s workshop manager who retired at the age of 75 some 7 years ago. Bobby left school to start working for his uncle Bobby Hind serving an apprenticeship as a bodybuilder and apparently one of the first tasks he was set was the construction of a new cattle container for Harry Bragg, this would be for the Leyland Beaver KAO 59 referred to in previous posts. Bobby worked at Hinds all his life buildin dozens of Platforms, Pantechnicons, especially attractive ones for Albions , mobile libraries and mobile shops. He has carried out som coach bodywork repairs for me in the past. He was also an accomplished cornet player in the Salvation Army Band. RIP Bobby.

Watched the half 10 Border news tonight they were on about the start of work on the Carlisle Airport Mr Tink was being interviewed. Every time he mentioned what was being done it was I did, I wanted, has our William been forced out he was never mentioned. Eddie.

I watched the early Border news “erfguy” so I’m glad I’m no on me own !! Got to say though Tink did make a point of referring to tarmacing when “he” gets permission but I don’t know what impression you got of him but the way he was dressed (a [zb] mess!) you could just imagine him knocking at your door " Tap of the morning t’ you Sur,we have just finished a big job down the road and we have a bit of black stuff left, sure we have,so would you be interested in my Boyos skimming over your drive Sur,honest to God those dandelions won’t grow back for a few weeks and by that time Sur we’'ll be miles away sure we will" "got to be cash Sur though I can fly you into the Bank in my helicopter sure I can " !!! I wouldn’t fancy employing Tink to surface a runway I was going to land my Jumbo on !! Cheers Bewick.

Snore bewick getting bored of you and your jealously towards Stobarts
Your like all the rest with the crystal ball, doom and gloom, nothing positive to say at all. Just do us all a favour and put the gypsy ball way and lets see what happens and lets see Stobarts turn Carlisle Airport into a success as lets face it, nobody else has or can make it work if its going to and nobody wants large brownfield site at the posh end of Carlisle do they??

Lets see Stobarts do a great job and lets see them get ■■■■■■■ into the 21st century

Have a Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year

Cheers

Are you totally devoid of a sense of a sense of humour “CG”?,it certainly appears so ! I simply watched the Border News and related what I saw and which was Tink looking like he could have been for all the world the “boss” of a Paddy tarmac gang,I couldn’t care less what happens to Carlisle “Airport” I use Manchester International and Heathrow when I fly abroad ! So get a life “CG” and get your dummy back into your mouth eh! Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year Marra! Bewick.

Merry Christmas to all.

Bewick is it true there’s an issue regarding acces to a new build in yout cul De sac & you blocked in a delivery lorry with your car then proceeded to tell your neighbour you would do the same if it was the emergency services?
Now if this is true shame on you… If not well rumours are better than the truth…
