Hey guys, just wanted to know if a crane lorry can be driven with just a class 2 licence? Many Thanks
Actually a mobile crane, no matter how big can be driven on a agricultural tractor licence.
Never seen one with L plates so does that mean you can actually drive one without a licence?
It depends on the weight of the vehicle.
Up to 7.5t in weight then you would need a C1 licence but above 7.5t you would need a C.
By ‘Crane Lorry’ do you mean a lorry where the only thing on it is a crane or one that has a load bed for cargo? The latter are HIABs but the booms (lifting devices) are made by other companies like Palfinger, Atlas and the like.
Cranes:

As far as I was aware you could still drive the two above cranes with a Class 2 licence.
I used to drive cherry pickers and their large ones weighed close on 50t and had 7 axles and a height of 72 meters, and that driver had just a class 2 licence for that.
Hiab: When the PTO is engaged the suspension drops at the back to enable the legs less to extend…

Sam Millar:
Serious question, can you drive a tractor unit on a C as long as you don’t pull a trailer? Or does the fifth wheel need removing/covering?

The suspension doesnt drop on that buildbase lorry, i have just finished a 6 month contract with them driving the same 03 plated lorry as the one pictured. the newer ones do, ie the DAF’s. and would love to have a go in one of those big cranes.
Harry Monk:
Yes, you can drive one although you won’t generally be able to use the crane attachment unless you have a HIAB certificate.
Incidentally, a bit of trivia for you, HIAB stands for Hydraliska Industri AB. Not a lot of people know that
Never knew that Harry, your never to old to learn.
