CPC

do you have to do the cpc if you own a rigid horsebox, and only used for transporting your own horses? and i,ve always understood no tacho is needed but have been told today that this is incorrect?? but cant find anything on Vosa for it…

No you don’t need a CPC as you would be on a restricted licence.

If it’s your own horse/horses and you are not transporting them for hire/reward then no O’licence is required and if all the driver drives is their own horse box, then no a driver coc is not required.
I am assuming you are referring to the driver cpc as that is the only way your post makes sense.

Horse Box users may be driving illegally if their horse boxes or trailers come under HGV categorisation.

VOSA have been increasingly stopping Horse Box and trailer owners that come under HGV categorisation and are finding that they are being driven illegally because the owners (quite understandably) know little or nothing about operator licensing and legislation regarding the running of HGV vehicles for commercial purposes.

Many Horse Box owners are saying (also understandably) that being categorised as HGV users for commercial purposes is not in line with their hobby and throws up barriers and red tape that will damage their ability to enjoy their activities.

However, naturally, there is a commercial side to equestrian sports and many commercial businesses that use horse boxes on a regular basis within their business are not exempt from HGV Operator Licensing regulations

If you own the horse box and the horse{s} then you dont need the DCPC .Remember that the P stands for professional,if no money is changing hands in connection with the vehicle you are OK as you are. If you work in conjunction with a riding school or organise gymkhanas for payment then you should have tachos as well as DCPC.

  1. As far as I’m aware no DCPC is required as long as you’re not driving for commercial purposes.
  2. If the vehicle is over 7.5 tonne you should be using a tachograph, exemptions for private use now stop at 7.5 tonne MAM.

I think the catch in all this is Hire and Reward. As far as I am aware that does not just mean money. If you compete and get a trophey is that not a reward?

That said if your rubbish you will be ok

That’s roughly how I understand it too Ldc… If your horse competes and wins, then you need to be run as a commercial hgv… I think.

All very confusing, but tbh, if I was driving a private horsebox, I wouldn’t stop for VOSA anyway same as I wouldn’t in my car

VOSA have powers to stop private motorists ,they can be a bit huffy about caravans in particular.

As a member of the horse and hounds site who has gone deply into this issue I can say 100% that no driver cpc is required for a private horsebox of any size unless the driver is under age 21 in a LGV over 7.5 tonnes

As for H&W - VOSA have produced a guide for this which explains everything
