CPC question

Completely new to the industry and have my 5-day intensive and test booked for next week.

Thanks to ‘acquired rights’, I decided to do my Driver CPC 35 hours last week in one go instead of doing modules 2 & 4.

With that now completed and CPC certificates in hand, by what year will I next need to have completed another 35 hours?

It’ll be 2027, won’t it? Every 5 years? I’m also new to this and soon to do my 35 hours (instead of Mods 2 & 4). Good luck for next week. Are you going straight for Class 1?

DQC is valid for 5 years

No, Class 2. I feel I need experience driving something of that size before doing Class 1.

You’ll receive your card within a week, probably less, the expiry date is on the card. However, once you have your card you can start adding modules for the next 35 hours block: my current card expires 2024 but I already have the next 35 hours in so I’m good until 2029.

OK. Still trying make up my mind personally. Not sure how confident I am about going straight to the Class 1 test and passing, though I do know someone who’s done it.

Personally, I’m practically ■■■■■■■■ myself about getting inside a Class 2 vehicle and navigating it safely and correctly. I think it’s safe to assume a Class 1 would add additional pitfalls.

The expiry will be on the card and it will be valid for five years.

I would ask the question about using one or more of your training days as a CPC qualified module. This would save time and expense and would get some on the board for when you renew next time. You might just have the upload fee to pay in addition to your outlay for the training. Of course ideally employers would all pay for the CPC training and pay you for attending, but not always the case unfortunately. I managed to get 2 modules I required (when doing C+E), which were put down as driving tuition or something like that.

Some trainers can do this and some can’t but there was an added complication added relatively recently (if I remember correctly) where you can’t repeat a module, so distinct modules may be required.

Bear in mind that everyone did it on Class One until 1997 when someone in Brussels thought it would be a good plan to stick another test in.

Yes, the roads are a bit busier and the trucks a bit bigger. But they’re much, much easier to drive and you have no gears to worry about normally.

I’ve taught to car drivers straight to artic recently and both have passed. Currently working on number 3! But I have many hundreds that I trained on artic prior to 97.

There’s no right or wrong. What is good for you is what is right. So that’s what you choose. But there’s no need to be afraid of artic if you’re trained correctly.

Many thanks for this, it really helps as I’m intending to go straight for Class 1. On the face of it I thought it made sense - unless someone in the know would really advise against it.

I’ve noticed some guys saying they could get no work as a Class 2 driver, but then as soon as they went to class 1 they could. Maybe depends on what part of the country you’re in, I suppose.
