just a quick question, maybe a totally daft one but I’m sure you cheery lot will set me right.
I’ve heard of owner drivers needing to get a CPC, as a relatively new driver I had to do an initial CPC module 4 course and I have done my CPC periodic.
So what is the OD’s CPC all about? Is there another course you need to do to get an O-Disc?
oops silly questions, a restricted licence is for carriage of own goods isn’t it? I have no means and currently have no need/desire to become an OD, merely being nosey, what are the cost differences between a standard and restricted license?
sorry I have tried searching but the minute you type in CPC all you get is nonsense about DCPC

this is a genuine question by the way
to obtain an operators licence you will be required to obtain the relevant “certificate of professional competence” yourself by taking the course and sitting the exams and passing, or employ someone who already has it to act as your transport manager, to obtain your “o” licence (unless you as someone else said are entitled to run under a restricted “O” licence)if you are going to use someone else vosa seem to be looking, from what I have read in the past, into how much time an outside cpc holder is sending checking what you are doing. several have been caught out in the past, for not doing their job correctly,
what you have to understand is as the cpc holder the buck stop with them.
one other thing from your post you said you had to do your mod 4 course I hope also you did your mod 2 as well otherwise you could be driving illegally
yeah I’ve done the mod 2 and 4, probably just got my numbers mixed up, cant remember much about test, just that I done it. I remember doing a test where you had to get a percentage of each question correct and a percentage of the overall test?
the reasons I asked the original question is the company I work for run 20+ coaches and are looking into getting a recovery lorry (unit and slider trailer). The obviously have o discs for their buses but I assume these are different to goods vehicles, and was just thinking how they would get about running an HGV. I believe recovery falls into a whole other category, but the suggestion was to do recovery for other local firms.
I know its all a bit muddled at the moment, and its just talk within the boss’ office but as i’m the only one there with a class 1 I wanted to check a the ins and outs.

I think as long as they only recover disabled vehicles no operators licence would be required, but if moving a vehicle say because it had no tax or mot then an operators licence would be required. I don’t know if the cpc for coaches is different than goods vehicles to be honest who ever holds the cpc at your place should know the answer to that
it would appear that a unit and slider probably wont come under a recovery vehicle category as it isn’t specially adapted for the use of recovery, in the way a spec lift is.
And also recovery of a disabled vehicle should be exempt from an o license. This seems to be the case for a spec lift anyway, and the returning of a fixed ‘disabled’ vehicle would require a standard o license.
sorry this seems to have gone off the original topic. but I’ve certainly got a few answers, thank you.

yeah, the boss does his research really well, the prospect of getting a motor is just a thought in his head just now, but I also like to know what the legalities would be just in case. not that I don’t trust him but it would be silly to drive without knowing the facts.
