CPC - Grandfather Rights

Apologies if this has been covered before but the more I look into this subject the more confused I am getting.

I passed my C+E in 1996 in the Army.
Now there is the CPC course which I believe I can delay by several years to get back on the road. (I intend to spend 1 day a year doing a CPC course to eventually bring me up to date).

I believe that I have to do a Module 2 and 4.
The CPC Case Study Theory - £15
Case Study Test - £23

Module 4 Walk around Test Price £200? approx

What is the show and Tell part?
Why is a one-day Module 4 so expensive with a +£50 test fee on top.
Then is there a charge for the CPC issue?

It would appear this Grandfather malarky is going to relieve me of £300. Does that sound correct? Or have I gotten something completely wrong?

Any advice or a direction to point me in would be gratefully received.

Cheers

I’m not sure about the other stuff, but you need to hold a Driver Qualification Card (DQC) to drive in the UK.

To get the DQC you have to do 35 hours of DCPC training (usually 5x7 hour days). And then another 35 hours in the next 5 years else it will expire.

The granddad rights expired in 2014.

Grandfather rights is transport managers cpc nothing at all to do with drivers cpc

Do 35hrs in a classroom(7 hrs a day for 5days) or mod 2 and 4, and u will get your cpc card, one or the other not both.

Grandfather rights is a term more often used in relation to having 7.5 tonne entitlement due to when you passed your car test (pre 1997).

In your case, you can do 35 hours of classroom training for CPC because you would be considered an existing truck driver prior to September 2009.

I believe a relatively recent change is that instead of doing the 35 classroom hours you can take the route of a newly qualified driver to bring your CPC up to date.

You don’t need to do both, but you would fall in with everyone else after doing the initial CPC. To be clear the initial CPC would give you a five year card or doing 35 hours would give you a five year card.

Just do the 35 hours of periodic driver cpc training and get your first DQC which will last you 5 years

You can do all 35 hours in one week if you can find a provider who does that

Forget initial dcpc pass/fail tests modules 2 + 4

After getting your first DQC you will have 5 years in which to get the next 35 hours for the next 5 year DQC

Drivers CPC requirement was brought in Sept 2009. Existing licence holders were given “Grandfathers rights” to carry on until September 2014 but needed to complete 35 hours training to continue driving after then. 35 hours will cost about £350. You cant drive commercially without the CPC. Don’t know where you are getting that you can “delay it”.

No, that extension was for FIVE years from 2009 and expired in 2014. You now have to take a periodic DCPC which is five 7hr modules of your choosing or Module 2&4. Reason Module 4 is so expensive is you’re paying for the hire of the driving school lorry for a few hours for the test.

If I were you I’d choose the five 7hr courses and make sure that EU drivers hours is in one of them.

YOU CANNOT DRIVE LORRIES FOR A LIVING UNTIL YOU’VE GOT YOUR DCPC CARD except with a few exceptions such as scaffold wagon where you’re going to be spending most of the day doing that rather than driving.

If he’s not held a cpc card before then does he not have to do the initial cpc so module 2 and 4 rather than 35 hours classroom?

Why forget 2+4 then? Why does he not need to do those?

Rowley, his CPC is considered lapsed, like any other driver who held his truck licence since before 2009 and didn’t complete the hours by 2014 or any time since.

Nevertheless as he’s never had a DQC he has the choice between doing MODs 2 and 4 or 35 hours periodic training.

Personally I’d do the 35 hours periodic training but it’s the OPs choice.

Can a newbie do that instead of mod 2 or 4?

The OP got a cat C+E in 1996 in the army, presumably he now wants to drive commercially for which he needs a DQC.

Because he’s never held a DQC he can choose to do either MODs 2 and 4 or the 35 hours periodic training, as you know MODs 2 and 4 can be failed whereas the periodic training has no test to fail.

For a newbie without a pre 1997 LGV C1 or a pre 2009 C/CE then the initial mods 2 and 4 tests must be passed

Think I got the years right …

You did get the years right, January 1st 1997 and September 9th 2009 respectively

In that case I’d definitely opt to do the 35 hours over mod 2 and 4
