Whilst it’s right and proper that people should be expected to check that they are not carrying illegal immigrants when entering the UK this couple did the right thing and turned the stowaway in to the police.
Surely a fine of £1,500 is going to discourage people from doing the right thing in future

I can see some sort of fine being in order, enough to encourage others to check thoroughly, but £1500 sounds like a reason not to do the right thing, and to shoo any clandestines away instead.
They should fine them £1500 to get the message out there that caravanners and truckers alike should not neglect their checks; but then reward them £1500 for their public-spiritedness in bringing the breach to the authority’s notice. Job done.
Better still, a bit of gunboat diplomacy on the other side of the channel wouldn’t go amiss!
