Cotswold Quarry Operators

I remember the artic now you’ve shown it; Do you remember the ones like it Smiths used on premix? My uncle had the F reg (the one used for low loader work, did Blackthorn when on tipper work) and there was one on a G reg based at Banbury driven by Phil Knight-always had his breaks at Sturdys Castle layby. The G reg originally had a Cat 350 but ■■■■■■■ gave Smiths a new engine (not many were made apparently, a 500bhp that was cut back to about 480. The Cat engine went into a loading shovel at Fish Hill. Dad learnt Class 1 on that and it was sold to make way for his Alpha.
Dad would trundle along with G reg on a dual carriageway doing about 49-50, let someone with a flash rig pull out and open her up to about 60 before the limiter kicked in!
Mentioning Jack Davies, must get a pic of his F reg ERF, it’s just passed MOT with nothing wrong.

Yeah I do remember that Lorry there was a lot of talk about it,The Engine was painted Black if I remeber correct.

I’ll ask Dad about the engine, though he’s colourblind so they all look the same to him!

I Found this on the Scrapbook thread as well ( I think ) Would this have been your uncles ?

Thats her! My Uncle Allan’ll smile when he sees her again! :smiley: :smiley: :smiley: This is the one she replaced;

Any chance you could put the F reg on the Smith and Son thread please? I’ve told a few colleagues at work what I’ve put on these threads, so I thought I’d do a dedicated thread and build up an archive of.

Anyone got any more of Huntsman’s lorries, always used to be one parked in the car park at the bottom end of Stow On The Wold.
Cheers Dave.

I,ve been looking for a pic of a Smith’s Foden that I pass most days in Stratford. It’s an artic with the earlier alpha daycab cab like the one above by the shovel, if anyone can help? Would like to make it as model, & guess it may not be around for much longer, on a Y plate I think.

Thanks, Dan.

Sorry about the delay, haven’t seen it around for a while. Told our Workshop Manager yesterday what you were planning to do, get in contact with them they’ll try and sort you out (if you want to get some measurements when it’s in the workshop or at Stratford etc.)

One of our drivers is ex Kingston Minerals he said to ask does anyone remember Kingston Minerals between Fairford and Lechlade? Kingstons’ workshops were where Fairford Concrete (sign now says “Charcon”) now stands behind Shell Garage and he said pit entrance was somewhere near the waterski school on the Whelford Road. Apparently Hanson pit at Horcots’ on the verge of closing. I think it shut originally about 6 years ago but they must’ve found more ground to dig as I’ve seen Cleavers artics coming from the Horcot direction.

Hi Muckaway
I remember going on Welford road pit with me dad. This lorry was I belive based there ( I’ve borrowed it from Bubblemans scrapbook thread hope he doesn’t mind ) maybe your driver will remember it.

He (Jim Sewell) does remember that lorry; said it was bought to make a regular run to Wales from Lechlade easier with the “big” engine. Most 8 wheelers now are rated around the 400bhp mark. I presume Davies bought it when Kingston Minerals were sold to ARC (Hansons) and thir lorry fleet was sold off. AW Cleavers bought some T reg ERF B-series tippers and done them up to use as pit lorries. I can remember Cleavers having a B-reg Foden 8wheeler that had a muck body fitted, apparently this was ex Kingstons aswell.

Davies bought it of an ARC O/D called John ■■? it was that baby ■■■ yellow when we got it. It was a good lorry in its day needed some catching up hill and down dale as it had a 3 stage Jake Brake  to hold it back. As you say they sound good, bit loud if its by your ear all the time.

Carpenters of Crudwell tipping MOT Type 1 stone at Gill Mill, ex Wickwar pit

Hi Nathan,
We see quite a few of Carpenters up this way, loading stuff back to Cricklade.
Cheers Dave.

We get a lot of our imported stock brought in by hauliers from your way Dave. A.E Gough do quite a bit of Wickwar material, also bring in Welsh slate chippings for the bagging plant. Cawley brothers were about earlier this week, I think many of the bulkers are backloading grain to Avonmouth etc. I even get down as far as Caerphilly about once a year; Sharp sand to the castle for CADW (if that’s how it’s spelt) the Welsh National Trust I think. Apparently, stone masons like it as it doesn’t take 700 years for it’s colour to weather!

I don’t speak Welsh Nathan,we are only just inside the border. I know the Gough family, they lent me nearly all their photo’s to put on the border thread.Cawley Bros are from Llanwrst North Wales. You are right with your spelling of CADW,they are involved with a lot of old buildings in this area. A E Gough run 12 artic bulkers and 2 eight leggers out of Hansons at Builth Wells quarry.
Cheers Dave.

Anyone know of a haulier that ran maroon F10/F12 artics in the Glos/Wilts area in the late 90s? Reason I ask is that my first plant job was on hire to MultiAgg at Kempsford pit moving soil (HE Services-don’t ask :unamused: ) and said lorries were running out of there. I remember one was on old T plate-I think company was John----? had white signwriting.

Cheers Bubbs,

Hi Bubbleman, we have just finished constructing a gas pipeline through the Cotswolds Wormington to Sapperton.
Huntsman’s supplied 1000’s of tons of quarried stone for it. Smith’s of Gloucester hauled a lot of sand in from
Allstones for pipe bed and backfill. regards Big Al
