Interesting photo of Smiths Foden M912ARK… at Tipton Transport we had a Foden 18t curtainsider M917ARK and later bought the identical M919ARK… all in the same batch of registrations…

Awaiting it’s fate; I think this one was scrapped as the engine had just about had it when taken off the road and the sheeting system had been removed for reuse.Notice that a beacon has disappeared aswell! The sister truck in the background lasted a bit longer as yard spare and I think it “emigrated”. The bodies on these two were worth more than the rest of them.
scrapyard is the best place for those narrow cabbed fodens , designed for men with a wooden leg so they could take it off when not changing gear , i used to get cramp in my left leg driving one . cheers , dave

A lot of truth in that; Several drivers have said they felt better after coming off them. I didn’t have a problem personally, except that my old girl idled too fast.

I thought I’d bump this thread with a pic of Smiths’ Stratford-based artic.
Since quarry companies have been mentioned in other threads, what pits can you remember working out of?
Old firms like Cullimores, Hoveringhams, RMC Aggregates, Amey/ARC/Hanson, Smith and Sons, Multi-Agg, Tuckwells, J Curtis, Constants, Grundon, Steetleys,Elliotts,Kingston Minerals etc…
I have worked out of most of them some good some bad , done many weeks out off smiths quarry in witney ,blue clay to various sites around the country, that stuff stuck well . worked out off daglingworth a lot, grundons at farringdon, huntsmans , hills, wick, wickwar, miss the tipper work, i was working for Baxters from Cheltenham
Great to see all those old names comeing up again done um all, one not there Sands and Gravels Standlake don’t know if that’s the Cotswolds

Iremember you on the Scania with the little steel body before you had the Hino ( ) I remember the clay to ardley, Mr Baxter’s last new Hino turned up for that job. Bet he regretted it…
…Saw Alan a month or so ago at Wickwar, he’s on for McAdam Transport.
We’re doing 800 ton of stone a day to M40/A34 job at the moment, if Dan still had those wagons he’d probably be on for us, can’t get enough subbies at the moment.

Bu**er how could I have forgot that, it’s just down the road from me! Apparently if you were collecting ex-pit from them, you had to wait until all their own trucks were loaded first. They had a large tipper fleet years ago, then they just seem to fade away. Had alloy bodied ERFs towards the end.

Tytheringtons still running, but Barnhill Quarry at Sodburys practically shut. I used to love going there with Dad as Smiths used to get their type 1 from there before changing and getting it from Wick and Wickwar. There was talk of Sodbury being used for a Waitrose. I’ve heard Hansons started up again there but residents of a new housing estate keep whingeing about the usual.
WHY BUY A HOUSE IN A TOWN KNOWN FOR IT’S STONE QUARRY? IT’S BEEN FOR 100 YEARS!

Don’t know if it’s at the same site but I hear drivers talking of getting loads from there. The pits in that area go on for years .
when i went for a chat with Cams for a job on the tippers out of tytherington, the first question was “have you got somewhere to park the wagon” ,i said “yes” “right start Monday” , i always got “first mix” at 04.00, almost always London.hopefully a quick tip and back to MACS Caff for breakfast, then up to Cullimores at Ciren for a Quicky into Bristol for a bit of bonus!,…chris

I’ve heard of many drivers in 60s and 70s taking their lorries home. My Dad and his 2 brothers all worked for Birds of Northampton in the early 70s on Commers when Birds ran tarmac round Oxon. Two of them would park up in Church Lane Hailey outside their parents and the other would take his to Ramsden. On the Old Oxfordshire thread Big G unit mentioned a Smiths driver who took his lorry home for years. I suppose insurance, o licensing and nosy neighbours killed it off.?

Evening guys
Tytherington is still going but only produces tar now, all other material is brought over from Chipping Sodbury. Apparently it makes more economic sense to cart the stone over, tip it off and then reload it onto other wagons…
Sodbury’s tar plant has been closed for nearly two years now but is still producing cleanstone at a fair old rate. Obviously it’s not as busy as it should be but it ain’t bad at the moment! Waitrose are talking about building down near the town next to the disused Barnhill quarry. It won’t make a lot of difference to the active quarry and could be good for the town but, as is always the way, some numptie doesn’t like the plans so its all stopped for a big pow-wow I believe.
Chris. You may be interested to know that Basil is still about and fairly active. The yard is still there too, its not been built on, which is very unusual. I presume you remember Jack Archer and Aiden Rees? Aiden passed away some years ago but I’ve heard nothing about Jack for a while. I’ll try and find out if you’re interested…
Just to fill a gap or two, I used to drive the tippers for one or two around here before I had the offer of a job in Sodbury, which is where I still am…
