Cost of food ?

How often do any of you lot et at diners that are not attatched to truck stops ? I know Mark does regularly. When I am in Yonkers I use Broadway diner and they do English breakfasts and bangers and mash … basically because I showed them what it was, thye have even got a supply of Lea & Perrins and HP just for me. The costs of meals is quite high there so there is no way I can afford to eat there more than twice aweek, a full breakfast with 4 rashers of Danish bacon, 4 English bangers, 2 eggs, fried tats, fried bread and fried tomatoes with acup of English tea is $14.00 plus a tip. At a diner near our yard where I went with 2 others last week a 8oz cheese burger with chips was a staggering $15.00 and drinks were extra. Take that to the Town and County diner on 206 north at exit 7 of the NJpike at Bordentown and the prices are half the NYC cost, where a full breakfast with bottomless coffee costs $7.25 and thats cheaper than McDonalds :open_mouth:

We usually stop at branded truckstops (for the internet and clean showers), and did try using mom and pop places, but they just don’t seem to get it and their food quality and cleanliness standards can be pretty crap.

Stopped at the Cenex in Kenmare ND and asked if they took EFS card (we can fuel at any place that accepts it, which is usually most places), she grunted and said “Yes, I suppose so, but we have to do a paper swipe and then ring it in” (same as Huskies), she obviously didn’t want to do it, and when I asked if i get a comp shower for filling up she said “No way it’s $7, Nothing comes for free here”, so, I didn’t bother putting $400 worth of fuel in. We bought some food there a few weeks later and it was disgusting.

When we are down south we do eat a lot of Pit BBQ food though, and will park on their premises.

Was that you parked at shelby again last sunday mick with a big sky dish on the mirror arm■■? The resturants at town pumps are pretty good and no to bad priced, stopped at the stop in Malta MT last sunday was late so went in for breakfast and didn’t taste to bad with free top up on coffee

Taffy, the Town Pump at Shelby MT has a decent restuaraunt attached to it

Like Mick, I use the pit bbq places, the chains like Famous Daves are pretty good, but the best bbq comes out of the little shacks on the side of the road, some of them don’t even do eat in, but the food is magnificent :sunglasses:

The Texas Roadhouse/Steakhouse places are good too, the cost is reasonable too, sometimes they work out cheaper, especially the ones with eat as much as you want starters/soup/salad, by the time you fill up on that you can box almost a complete dinner for the next day and the microwave :bulb: You can get a beer with dinner in most of them too :sunglasses:

The one thing I miss though are vegetables, I am sick to death with bloody sweetcorn :unamused:

And the breakfasts, although vast are crap, no baked beans, no tomatoes and strips of fat instead of proper bacon :unamused:

I hear what you say about educating them Pat, just a shame you hadn’t been running ahead of me a few months ago. Nianiamh and I went into the Big Sioux in Grand Forks ND and asked for sausage, egg, beans and chips. Six plates and two bowls turned up ten minutes later :open_mouth: Two plates of sausages, two plates of fried eggs, two plates of chips and two bowls of beans :open_mouth: We couldn’t eat it from laughing and even though we’re a pair of fat [zb]s we couldn’t get through it anyway, it would’ve fed a small army ffs

Just finished the remains of our ‘Soul Man’ Pit BBQ which we bought at lunchtime and which beat us both. Cath says teh truck smells like bonfire night, that’s the smoked brisket… mouth watering.
Still laughing at NMM’s feast for breakfast.

BTW: The TA travel stops will give you a meal for free the same as the one you just ate, if you like, now that’s what you call seconds!

Taffy, if you see a ‘Ryans’ on your travels, it might not be an Irish pub, it’s a buffet meal place where you can graze until you burst for a few dollars.

Seen a few places I wanna stop at but its finding the time or somewhere to park

Parking is no problem, you can stop anywhere if you use this…

If you flip the hood too it makes it look much better  I’ve done it a couple of times myself, works every time :sunglasses:
