Considering a change

Been toying with this idea for a while now and would like to know more if you’d be so kind…

I’d like to drive abroad for a while, possibly a year or two but I’m having a hard time picking through all the adverts and general b/s out there so If any of you can give me a run down of the legal stuff it would be much appreciated.

The thought initially would be Canada, no I’m not an ice road wannabe - it’s the scenary I’m after, that and I’d rather be cold than hot. I’ve read other posts on here, I’ve no problem with hard work or very cold weather - it’s all part of the job and I’m under no illusions about this. Any other sugestions would be welcomed though.

I understand (for canada at least) that I’d need to take another test, and from what I can make out I’d need a job to go to before I can do anything much but that’s about the limit of what I’ve been able to find out sofar.

Like I said I’m just gathering info at the moment so I can have more of an informed think about it.

Canada is not all cold weather, and you would get used to that bit anyway, but if you can get on with a company that runs Canada/USA yo would be heading for the sun quite a lot in winter and enjoy the cooler (but still warm) Canadian weather when you are heading back north in summer.
Look on the Canada job bank and contact companies who can legal fast track you into the country using the PNP system which allows class 1 LONG HAUL drivers in as Temporary Foreign Workers, with a view (not a guarantee) to obtaining Permanent Residency.

If you want to live in the USA you need to marry one of them, or have a close family member, ie mother father, sister, or brother living there as a citizen.

If you’re looking at a temporary move then the HRSDC programme is the one you want to look at, this is a temporary work permit that lasts for two years and then you either migrate to the PNP and get nominated by the province for residency, or you get the hell outa Dodge.

The criteria for the HRSDC is more flexible than the PNP, an immigration officer told me that Bin Laden could get in on an HRSDC permit :open_mouth:

Other benefits of HRSDC are that you have a guaranteed minimum income of $2500 for the first two months and $3500 for the following 22 months and your employer has to pay for your flight over and your return at the end of the term. Ok, the money ain’t great, but it can be worse during the first couple of years as many have discovered (see the BFS, H&R, Ayr threads) at least on HRSDC you have a guarantee that something will be in the bank

Thankyou, will have a look. Any links to anything useful?

Nothing I know of for sure, try google, that’s where I’d go

this HRSDC thing i know nothing about it but i spoke to an englishman on this and they guaranteed him $3,500 per month,1 month he earned $3000,00 and they made it up to $3500,00 the next month he made $4000,00,guess what they paid him $3500,00 he asked hey i earnt $4000,00 the reply was you owed us $500,00 from last month,i believe they said it was an average pay thing.i felt right sorry for this chap as it was around the 30th december 2009,we were in the flying j at calgary he had to wait there till the new year with no pay at all to go and tip,he lived in winnepeg and it was the first time him and his wife had not been together at new years for 29 years.

That’s a bit harsh, I was on that scheme myself when I first came over, I never had that happen to me, but then I wouldn’t have stood for it and they knew that only too well, it just goes to confirm what some of us have said on here at great length about how badly some companies are treating immigrant workers, anyone who’s been on here for a while will be in no doubt as to my feelings on the subject, but for those who are new to the site…

I think that these companies are disgusting and nobody should put up with them just to get PR, all the while people ‘■■■■ it up’ they’ll continue to do it, so as they can’t get Canadians to work there and then can’t get immigrants to work there, the same amount of trucks are still needed to carry freight, so someone else expands, there aren’t enough drivers in Canada, so the decent companies that have expanded will need immigrant workers and they’ll treat them properly, so everyone’s a winner, so simple really
