Hi
Yesterday got my certificate number, from DVSA, for passing HGV Class C theory tests.
In the letter it says how to go about learning and booking the practical test.
I was under the impression that the next step after passing theory tests was to prepare for the case study theory test. Is the case study optional? What about CPC certificate?
Can someone please explain what should I do next. Thanks in advance.
p.s. I wish to become professional lorry driver Class C.
Passing part 1a (multiple-choice questions) and part 1b (hazard perception) and part 3 (the practical driving test) gets you your driving licence.
Passing part 2 (case studies - similar to part 1a but the questions are asked in a different way) and part 4 gets you your CPC card (which lasts 5 years).
If you passed your car driving test before 1997 (know as having grandad rights) you have the option of doing 35 hours in a classroom (usually 7 hours x 5 days) instead of part 2 and part 4. If you can, it’s best to do 35 hours in a classroom instead of part 2 and part 4 because there’s no test when doing the 35 hours classroom based training, so you can’t fail.

Lorry tests cost:
part 1a (multiple-choice questions) - £26
part 1b (hazard perception) - £11
part 2 (case studies) - £23
Great post. Many thanks.
Yes, I have passed my driving licence before1997.
Two more questions please:
Q1) If I do just the 35 hours in classroom, will I still get CPC card, or must I do case studies ignorer to get the CPC card.
Q2) Do you recommend I do the 35 hours in classroom before doing the practical driving test (part 3) or after.
Your help is greatly appreciated.
You can do the mod2+mod 4 or the 35 hours cpc “training” both will get you the card, you will really struggle to fail the mod 4 and mod 2 is they theory test again basically.
You can do the cpc before your practical test no problem
You will get your CPC card after doing 35 hours in the classroom.
I would do part 3 (the practical driving test) before the 35 hours in the classroom.

I shoild mention, if you passed before 1997, I eoupd personally do the 35 hours rather than trying to book mod 2.
Due to the inept system working between DVSA and DVLA it can be an absolute headache trying to book mod 2 and personally took me weeks to “get approval” from DVLA.
Who knows why, but from what i hear its still a [fb] show of a process. Doesn’t apply however if you passed post Jan 97.

Personally, I would do it the other way around for the following reasons.
-
as you’re no doubt aware The DVSA are not currently conducting tests at the moment due to the four week lockdown. It’s sensible to use your downtime wisely and get signed up to an online 35 hour course.

Secondly,
You want to hit the ground running when you have passed your test. If you do the CPC first, you’ll be able to start working/taking assessments straightaway. It can also be a little less daunting if you have driving assessments as soon as you’ve passed your test rather than having to wait a week to get the CPC sorted.
You’ve been given the correct information. But you find it easier to choose your trainer and let them do the leg work.
