0not my picture ,it looks better here than when they painted in red ,a great looking example one id happily drive today.

I used to notice for the first time just over 30 years ago while working for a storage company in Bonnybridge nr Falkirk in central Scotland these Dennis`s owned by Hinchcliffe who loaded waste paper for mills in the Lancashire area . They ran a very but very smart fleet and I became a big fan of the company after that . These must have been very durable motors as they were fitted with a 6LX Gardner engine , I can never recall noticing any with a sleeper cab like the one in the photograph but would welcome an interior view if it was possible and like you Dan I would have no problem driving one now , in fact I am very surprised this cab was not used by other manufacturers , I am sure someone out there will keep me right on this !!! .

Don’t forget same cab was on the dust cart as well

A nice little project to fill your spare time Dan.

This below was the last Dennis RS we ran at Tyne and Wear, it had been converted from a Pump to a flat and Moffett Mounty carrier and was used to collect scrap or damaged cars for RTC exercises at the training centre, it also was a stand by vehicle and used when the Incident Response tautliner bodied Volvo FL6 was in workshops for its annual service. It had to be sheeted up then so I usually got the job, even used a couple of my old ropes from my driving days. It had the Perkins V8 and auto box, extremely noisey but it could trot on once wound up. As for cab comfort it had a lot to be desired but not much different from similar vehicles of the same era, almost no inside panelling, fixed seats, multi springs all round, no adjustable steering and poor heating/ventilation, however it served its purpose for many years and it was only sold off a few years ago and still in almost the condition as in the photo which I had taken in the 90’s for a modelling project to replicate the Dennis and Moffett in 1/24 scale, not bad for a vehicle around 30 years old. Cheers Franky.

Can’t remember one of those D&D motors through Kendal, they were usually Trader 6 wheelers. So what spec would that Dennis have been, Perkins P6 ? Eaton two speed ? good photo of yesteryear though ! Cheers Bewick.

When i first read the title of this thread i thought maybe mrs smith had joined trucknet .

R.L Nash Haulage of Upper Basildon, Berkshire, ran many of those Dennis (Dennis!) and some of theirs (or maybe all?) had the BMC 5.1 engine and four speed gearbox in them. Can’t remember what back end they had though.

As a spotty faced apprentice mechanic with the ERF dealer in Edinburgh who also supplied Dennis trucks I can recall carrying out a pre-delivery- service on 3 of the same model as D&D Transports motors , they were for delivery to Robertson of Inverness . The 3 motors I checked out were fitted with BMC engines and gearboxes and Eaton axles . They were very well built and durable motors .

Lawrence I believe you and Mr Crow are very good friends , could you ask him why they bought and ran large numbers of Dennis`s in the 60s when there must have been others makes they could have run ?.

hi larry
i seem to remember a firm called W.G.THOMAS running a small fleet of dennis 4 and 6 wheel dennis trucks on general haulage,i think they were painted dark green this was in the 1960s,i think there yard was on the left as you left middlesbrough on the trunk road heading towards dorman longs, what engine would these have in??

all the best for the new year

The Dennis in the D&D pic will be a Pax II which could be ordered with an in house overhead valve version of their older side valve, the OHV engine gave a further 10bhp giving 70bhp, these were Petrol powered and the move into Diesel meant the Perkins P6 or Gardner makes and the Dennis diesel engines. I believe the reference to BMC 5.1 litre engined Dennis vehicles will be the later Max or even Pax IV types which also came with Perkins 5 or the 5.8 litre 354 and four or five speed boxes. Dennis never done too well with their haulage class of vehicles especially in the multi-wheeled chassis and always relied on their Fire and Refuse vehicles as their biggest sellers. Franky.
