Conference Haul

Hey guys,

been fascinated by the world of tour driving/ staging work for as long as I can remember ( my dad used to subby for redburns many moons ago) but enough of that Rose tinted nostalgia,

I have been offered and accepted a job at conference haul, after a day out with one of their drivers and just wondering if you guys had any hints and tips, as its the type of work I have always wanted and don’t want to mess it up lol. Loads of photos in tour truck photos in the next few weeks.
cheers guys

Congratulations on the job.

Hints and tips? Well first and foremost I’d say be prepared to muck in and do absolutely anything if needs be, I was never too proud to make the tea or go off and find some sandwiches etc for the riggers if that was what was needed when I was doing that sort of work.

Try and learn as much as you can about companies you do jobs for, what their goals are etc.

DON’T be having a ■■■■■ up against the drive axle wheel in the poshest square in Vienna just as the client walks around the corner with the entire board of one of the World’s top ten companies, hoping to make a good first impression when they see the stand (no, not me but it did happen  )

And good luck.

Thanks harry monk, I was brought up around tour work, one thing I pride myself in is mucking in and getting the job done, so not to proud to make tea etc.

Saw your magnum on the M3 the other week and was looking very smart, how’s work been?

As well as hoped for, all ticking along ok at the moment, I’m having various chats with people about doing conference/roadshow/promo work later on, same as you that’s always been my thing. Luckily I’m subbing for someone who understands that and doesn’t mind if I come and go as and when.

It’s supposed to be a busy year coming up on tour work so you should get to go to a few interesting places…

Don’t get hyped up about going to a certain venue or event.

Learn the terminology, LX, Deck, Legs, Truss, etc and you’ll be fine.

Keep a sharpie on your belt along with LX tape and a blade.

I’m new to this type of work also, started in November. Next week i’m off to Romania, Hungary and Serbia for six weeks. Loving it so far.

Hi congrats on the new job. Company I work for use Conference Haulage for all their transport. Expect a lot of TV work Xfactor, Britains Got Talent, the Chase to name but a few. Keep the clients happy, take very good care of the load and generally muck in where needed. The feedback always gets back to the office. The guys who run Conference Haulage are really nice guys and have been in the industry for years. All the gear is fairly new mostly MAN, they also have a Sprinter and a Mitsubishi 7.5 toner. They are always 100% legal. Expect a lot of Central London, late nights and there can be a lot of waiting round when loading out of venues. We always try and load/ unload the drivers as quick as possible at the warehouse.

When you start and they give you a job unloading or loading LED screens in Sunbury come say hello to Tony.

All the best
Tony
