Do any company’s still put drivers through there class 1? Asking for a friend who wants his licence.
I know stobbarts used to. Do they still do it? Or any places around Manchester northwest area?

With a massive queue of EE certified drivers.
Doubt it.
With a huge amount of Qualified tree trimmers here in New Zealand that will work for $5 /hour, I for one, cannot understand why we import them from the islands
Sponsor your own self for a minimum wage job. #godhelpyouson.
Some firms did the training but I doubt if its going to happen now. Plenty of drivers to pick and choose from. Maybe the Army. If your mate really wants a driving job he could try the big bus firms ,get a few years of throwing big stuff around then have a bit of cash and do the lorry training.
thanks . think he applied ages ago to stagecoach but never heard back.
he used work in warehouse order picking n stuff but like a lot of others hes just been laid off. and he said thinking of doing hgv as always seem be work a. but doesnt really want spend his redundancy pay on lessons.
i know years ago a lot of places did . but these days im not sure
When i was doing my lessons as recently as last nov there were 2 guys that had been put through their class 2 and were doing their class 1 by Tesco’s. However, i think they had been in the warehouse for a number of years and it was part of the warehouse to wheels program.

So really your mate should just use his redundancy money and get on with it.
I thought redundancy pay was for living expenses and possible retraining to find a new job?
Not likely to find a company willing to just pay a random to put them through their test when there’s thousands and thousands of hgv licence holders out there, Some that are possible about to be laid off from their current jobs.
Tell him to cough up and get on it if he really wants to be a lorry driver. As suggested he can always join the Army, they will pay for his license with as many attempts required to pass, whilst earning a decent crust in the process.
FedEx Freight - Driver Apprentice/City Driver
FedEx have a driver apprentice program here in the US, maybe there’s one in the UK ?
Is there anyone in the area you live in have silver or gold FORS stickers over the motors?
I’ll double check on Monday if it’s silver and/or gold, but holders have to prove that they provide licence acquisition training (at a measly 1% over I think 36 months).
May be worth a punt if you can find someone that has it. May be worth phoning and mentioning that you know they have FORS Silver and/or gold and know they do licence training.
My firm used to do driving apprenticeships but we got a whole bunch of nuggets in the last set we took on so have stopped it.
Also may be worth paying for your class 2 and trying to find a firm that are primarily arctics with a small fleet of rigids. Normally after being there a year or two and proving yourself they will put you through your class 1.
I used redundancy to pay for my class 2 about 15 years ago, cost me about 1k then another couple of hundred for a re-test i think, did my class 1 last year using a 0% credit card taken out specifically for that purpose incase i needed multiple re-tests, i was assessed as only needing 10 hours training followed by test, which i managed to pass so class 1 cost me £750 . My employer had offered to put me through my class 1 but i decided to pay for it myself because i didnt want to be tied to them for 2 or 3 years. If he wants it badly enough he should just pay for it himself like most people do.

Bingo
And as trucktruck Above said , they got a load of nuggets on their last intake so stopped the driver training.
Why pay out thousands on somebody you don’t know, when there are probably people already on their payroll they already know they will put through before someone off the street
Do class 2 get then try the big groups. Turners have a training programme . Fagan and Whalley have one if they have yard near him. Give those a call you might be lucky
I have just completed my class 1.
The whole thing from start to finish set me back £1995. That’s not a big sum in the grand scheme of things.
Land the right job at the end of it and its 3 weeks wages, or less.
I didn’t want to hang around trying to get put through it, took responsibility for my own future.
It doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg…
