Companys from North Manchester in the 70's

Having a go at posting the Henry Johnson pic here boys hope I’m successful .

Easy it was first time  …try again

Mancunian Transport as it was…good times had by all!!!

Do you drink around ChadVegas or are you more sensible than that?
Does that guy on Milne Street still park his wagon in the front yard?
He used to drop his trailor in Express’ yard.
No John has moved he split with the lady there plus shes moved on as well.I drink on Victoria St mainly .I dont wander round to many times as the pubs shut early midweek.Plus my daughter works there glass collecting.

Some great pictures there and a few names mentioned that I haven’t heard for years. Here is another of my brothers old pictures which I sent to Big Als Truckstop website ( if you haven’t had a look on this site then I think you might be missing something ).
Big Al informed me that the Elk Mill on Broadway is no longer there and that the lorry might be a Maudsley.

Can anybody remember the Oldham and District Heavy Good’s Vehicle Drivers Benefit Group from the early seventies ?. Hopefully that question should get some old rusty bells ringing.
Regards Steve.

Thanks fella’s for all the responses, pics & memory’s
As I’ve said in some previous posts I’ve got a couple of health problems that stopped me driving and today is one of them days when I’m struggling to just drive the efing laptop and put a few sentences together, so I’ll get back to this thread as soon as I’m feeling back on top.
Thanks again guys
Regards
Dave Penn;

Hi Dave,
I am sure that everybody at TruckNet hopes that you will get better soon and thanks for having the foresight to start what could become a really interesting thread. You may of opened up a lorry load of pleasure and a barrel full of monkeys  .
I know that there used to be loads of haulage companies around the Manchester area, so I am certain there must be loads of tales to share.
Anyway Dave I hope that your health improves over the next couple of days so you can let us all hear your stories.

B.T.W. what was the name of that company from Moston who ran up and down to Scotland with Tizer, I bet you remember drinking bottles of that stuff.
Regards Steve.

Thanks fellas for taking this thread a bit further  and thanks Steve for your support  , I thought I’d try and start this thread going because everything seemed to be about the company’s down South and doing Europe and the M/E work, not having a go at them lads but us lads who just did UK work had some big laffs as well!!

B1 GGK
‘Just gripped my dad, he used to work for Courtald’s bringing cotton back from Liverpool, The loader there on the overhead crane was a guy called Harry Ryland’s, My dad said he virtually ran the warehouse, he lives round the corner from me.’

I remember Harry and a lot of the other whse guys and drivers who were on for Courtaulds in the early 70’s and I hope to add more to this later.

Manchester and the North had 100’s of haulage co’s; doing the general UK work and still spending the week away from home!! sometimes even being weekened!!!

The posts have brought loads of hidden memories back for me and I’m going to try and search some pics out to put up on here, might not be that good quality though.

Thanks for the link to the Henry Johnson Dodge picture but I can’t see it? It would be great to see it as I was the first driver at HJ’s to get one of the new Dodge ‘Commandos’ with a sleeper cab (BNB 216T) although it was a flat when I got it

Thanks again guys I’ve got a load more to add to this thread and will do so as soon as I feel a bit more up to it.

■■? Burton Middleton (Tippers)

I think the wagon in front of ELK Mill is actually a Leyland

Hi Boden, I think that the Burton bulk tippers that you are thinking off is Thomas Burton, Rhodes Middleton.
My wife’s uncle worked for Thomas and Albert Burton for over thirty years.
If you remember in the 60s and seventies it was not only haulage companies who did distance work.
Before Contract Transport became popular factories and mills usually had their own fleets of lorries and could be seen all over the U.K.
Truckspark mentioned about the hundreds of companies in the North West, most of which you would see on a regular basis. Who can remember Roy Trevor Removals from Warrington ? I think that they also might of done a bit of work out of Fibreglass in Saint Helens.
A couple of the works that I can remember who had their own lorries in the seventies were Radcliffe Paper Mills, Fothergill and Harvey from Littleborough.
Vitafoam in Middleton, Harrison and Jones at the Swan Mill, Middleton Junction, Draka Foam from Glossop, and can anybody remember Schreiber Furniture in Trafford Park ?.

Courtaulds Ltd; Northern Spinning Division whose massive transport depot was next to the British Areospace factory on Greengate, Middleton, Gtr. Manchester.

I remember them well. My dad worked there until a 5 1/2 cwt bale of cotton came crashing down on to his leg. Actually, he did go back once he was better, but he didn’t stay too long

What about alans trafford park they had a smart wagon&drag on the kellogs contract anyone have any pics of that
