hi Stanfield I worked with a Jack shockledge at Hadfeilds when they were at the bottom of oldham road, back in the early 60s
Jack lived in the west end of Ashton, the last time I saw him was about 13 years ago in the Pineapple on Stockport rd.
Hi rocky-7 I also remember Hadfields when they had a warehouse on Old St Ashton next to what was the pavillion picture house,a company my dad worked for in the late 50’s/early 60/61 Herald Displays from of shepley ind est Audenshaw used to use there vans for display removals( eg motor shows etc at earls court) they made the stands for different car companys and the likes.
Hi rocky7, here is one of J. Shockledge’s 1st wagons, sent through from Stanfield.
( Sorry for the long wait though mate I’ve not been checking my e-mails.)

I would be about 4 or 5 at the time I will ask my mam if she still as it.I cant for the life of me remember who else my Dad drove for, at the time as a kid it wouldnt be importantBut I am making sure now that my pics are saved.what few I have,
Hi rocky -7 You will be right about your photo they used to put wagons in the Pageant every year I used to go in it with my grandad and uncle,They were Bedfords what they had at the time around 1951/55.Hope you can find photo and post it on thread.
Someone was asking for Firth Transport, I’ve just found this of one of theirs, was it one of the last lorries they had ? and are there any older ones around.
Plus a couple of older pics of other Tameside wagons.

hI STANFIELD, I HAVE GOT MY MOTHER ON THE CASE LOOKING FOR OLD PICS OF MY dADS TRUCKS. I SEEM TO REMEMBER HE DROVE A FORD WITH THE ACCELERATOR IN THE MIDDLE ■■? I COULD BE WRONG BUT IT STIRS SOMETHING IN MY MEMORY. IN THE 40s/50s most trucks where ex army vehicles. It was a good time to start a transport company, most of them are now just memories, but a few are still going, I think Ernie Bailey started this way with Bayfreight.
Hi Rocky7 Thanks for the reply.Bayfreight now thats another firm based in Staylbridge/Ashton. Not seen any pics of them on here has anyone got any? along with Broadhurst transport…By the way rocky are you from that area.
John
Hi Stanfield,Yes I come originally from Ashton.but i started driving for Leslie J. Mellor from Glossop in 1962 when I was 19
Being A big lad no one questioned my age, or even asked me for my driving licence.I went working as a labourer at arrowscroft mill in Hollingworth, for a couple off weeks a guy came in from International Cotton waste off Victoria st. dukinfield. He coudn,t reverse it down the ginnell so he dumped and jacked in. I loaded it and took it back to the mill at Duky and got the job. In those days there was no such thing as an HGV licence. I was on the old “C” licence at first then I went on to “A” licence, I got my Class 1 on Grandfather rights and have been on the road ever since, I started going abroad in the late 60s, and was on continental and M/E, up until the EEC made a mess of things, I retired from General haulage when I reached 65 and I am now on the trade plates,
Does anyone remember PUMA Transport from Stockport, they were purple coloured Fodens and Seddon atky,s. I worked for Brian up to the end . He got ripped off by two brothers from southampton, I cant recall their names but they were a right pair of gangsters.

Anyone remember Currys Shamrock express from pilsworth,Dews also ran a foden 6 wheel low loader which was featured in truck magazine around 89. Perhaps Dreva might still have it . About twelve months after the footbridge on the m62 was replaced, a yellow foden low loader from astley ,cant remember the name knocked the bridge of again. I dont know if this is true but a guy told me when it got knocked off the second time a scammel tipper was overtaking the low loader and a piece off concrete went through the scammels windscreen injuring the drivers arm .Someone went to see if the driver was ok and the driver told him that he had just stolen the truck and then drove off before the police came. Regards Foden 46
I recall Shamrock Express for the late 70s. They used to be based on Heywood Industrial Estate. They specialised in overnight groupage and full load service to Northern and Southern Ireland. A friend of mine, Terry Monaghan, used to work for Shamrock for a number of years. About 1980 the company became Currie Contracts running wagon and drags, however, I will always remember the F86s they ran at that time. I have attached a couple of photos apologies for the quality.
To Stanfield and Tipit, If my memory is right I think the john hills truck was driven by my Dad, back in the 40s, they are still going but they dont have their own trnsport now. R.F Fielding had their contract up to them selling out to Fowler welch, but i dont know if they carried on with the contract■■?
Hi Paul,
Nice bit of nostalgia there with the Bedfords, also the Leyland Comet coming under the railway bridge, always notorious for a bit of water.
Cheers Dave.
I Dont like to announce it but T.Brierley Ltd of Swinton ceased to be as from 21 Oct 2009. Tommy is really cut up and cant even look people in the eye because he feels like he has let everyone down. He didn’t it was getting bumped by a customer that did it but he has taken it hard. T Brierley was established in 1948 and it is all he has ever known. At the age of 71 he said the fight had gone out of his self and if he had been 20 years younger would have tried to carry on but maybe now was the time to go.
