TIPIT:
Are there any photos about of Alec Sharples wagons from Salford.
I drove for him in '75 doing alot of work from Constantine Lloyds Packing at Newton Heath, Salford Docks and Manchester Containerbase.
They bought one of the prototype (H-grille) Transcontinentals which caught fire with an electrical fault in the yard one day, and totaly burnt out. I heard they changed colour from red / maroon, to yellow / black because it gave them more work out of the docks or something ? Their yard was originally off the A6, (the bottom of Cross Lane) then moved into Trafford Park and Weaste, before going over to Agecroft. Did they link up with a haulier called RJM ? at Agecroft.Austin Wilkinson at Weaste.
Oswald Ingham’s at Deane Lane, Newton Heath.
Norman’s ( Red TK, lutons ) Clayton Bridge.
Normans Transport were based round the back of the Bay Horse public house on the road through to woodhouses nr Clayton Bridge.Another one from the clayton area in the 60’s/70’s was Hunt Transport.Red Leyland comets all flatbeds anyone remember them and what happened to them ?I think they were on North Rd Clayton, not certain about that.
hunts that was an old firm they went back to horse and carts there yard had an arch entrance to it think they packed in the late 80s last time i saw the place maynes were in there
Is this one too far north for this thread.
Samuel Hunts was the company your talking about, Maynes are now in their yard down Bank Street Clayton. They ran Seddons all 4 wheeler flats (some of the drivers were trampers I think) until about 1965 when they bought their first ergomatic cabbed Leyland Comet and they never bought anything else after, they went all Leyland. As I remember not long before they packed up they bought a tractor unit or two also.
Another company from the Manchester area was G Benson & Sons they used to be down in the old arches on New Allen St off Livesey St Collyhurst when they first started during the 60s.I think they used to run AEC Mandators/Mercurys at the time, painted in red livery. Are they still operating.
Benson’s garage to go with Stanfield’s post above, did they later run some Mercedes SK’s as well as these Volvo F7’s.
This firm below Brewster Craven always reminded me of Benson’s for some reason.
The Bensons lads in the picture above all look like they’re taking a leak up the back of the trailer . I remember them running AEC tractor units possibly Mercury’s with single axle trailers collecting all the waste paper from the printworks (Daily Mirror/Express etc) around Manchester.
are they the same bensons that ended up on royce trading estate in trafford park . they got bought out i think ? any one know any more
the same ones paul they got bought out by a chap that ran out of the timber yards of trafford park . changed his name to united trspt then they became keedwells
the cardboard company if i remember greenfields middleton
think the waste paper firm was maybanks at pilsworth
opposite Normans yard was an asphalter called pete peacock and Normans serviced his truck for him

The Super Comets of Hunts reminds me of an outfit called Forrest with Cream and Brown (or Fawn) 16 tonners, one used to park in Whitefield and an ex driver of theirs did a bit where I was at the time, which was in the mid-70’s, I never saw one anywhere else though. There was also Elliots Sand and Gravel from Radcliffe. I believe their site was later used for Landfill by Beatwaste and then Wimpwywaste.
