Can anyone give a few pointers as to approaching companies for likely haulage work that they may have to offer. Would it be quite simply writing a straight forward letter asking if they had any haulage work to contract me. Are they generally receptive to this kind of approach. Would they at this point expect a costing breakdown and a quote of price from me. Which is the most common way of giving a price? would it me a milage quote or a price for the job? Cheers to all for reading.
There’s a few factors here kit. Start off with introducing yourself, that in itself is a hurdle, as there are always gatekeepers, to the actual man/woman you should be talking too. Don’t worry about prices at the minute. Get an initial relationship, if it’s a manufacturing firm that always subs out they will no doubt offer you the price, a haulage firm will also know what is too high or too low, a lot of the time it’ll be them telling you. As before, don’t over think it, I’m gonna guess your possibly a driver, or maybe not even that far into transport, get ya cpc done and loads of it will make sense and you’ll also make contacts. What is your status kit if you don’t mind sharing, are u a driver? Of how many years?
Matt,
just read your reply to my other post. I am very aware of some if not all of my questions/ queries on here giving the impression that I am completely new to this game in every way. Matt I am just that. I am shortly due to leave the forces and have always considered driving of some kind to be my preferred option of next career. I have just a couple of months ago passed my class 2 or rigid if you like. You may also be surprised to know that I have also just gained my CPC trans’ mgr.’ qual too! yes I know some of my questions wouldn’t lead you to believe that. I have certain knowledge granted, all I might add from theory work. I am a great believer in theory and practical knowledge making the right cocktail for success but also in jumping in at the deep end if you believe in yourself. I have used this forum and other media to feel the ground of others and their experiences ( by asking really basic stuff I know) which hopefully in the end ( a few months time for me) will arrive me at the answer and what direction I would like to follow. I say at this point that having decided to do my CPC was a good move. I found that it opened up a door of much interest for me in the haulage industry and has left me feeling almost frustrated to get started. I also learned as you are aware that if I became an OP then I would not need to employ a trans’ mgr.’ which is a small bonus I suppose. Also, on my CPC course was a chap who inspired me to think of going it on my own. He started out with his own truck and is now running 3. He subs for Maritime!!!, which I have read much, not so good things about on here. He makes it work though. Only difference being is that yes he had a few years driver experience before hand and I can hear you saying, there you are, that’s where the difference is. I am going to be a driver for that there’s no doubt, just which direction to follow. I have registered self employed and am about to take on an accountant and ask should I become Ltd or not. The comments from people like you are very helpful and guiding me to a degree to that decision so thanks Matt.
Right… It’s all making sense now pal, think uv got my number from a pm pal, gis a ring as easier than posting endlessly on here, got a few more gems to share with ya.
Thanks in advance
Matt
Matt cheers for chat, got cut off somehow! Things becoming clearer by the day. like I mentioned, I will make good use of the agencies so by the time I’m ready to make the next step I will be far more confident with the leap. I know you have said in a previous post what you recon I could ask for as in hourly rate. I had thought prior to that that I would ask in the region of £15 an hour! so I wasn’t far off what you had suggested. I’m doing an HIAB Course next week and then a SAFED. have got my C+E lined up early next year also. Just on the OP with own truck subject, my cost figures on weekly, daily or per Klm are cutting it too fine for me at present. I know its he insurance that is causing the problem. On presenting a quote to a firm for a job would I be way off in your mind asking £3.00 per mile one way? cheers, Mal
Matt If i may ask mate,
I will be an owner but not a driver, I will let the drivers drive and I will focus on the Administration and running of the business and ensuring we comply with the rules and regs etc. My head ache atm is, I have found suitable offices to work from but struggling to find yard space. If I rent space from another nearby haulage is this possible to have trucks parked elsewhere and my office is in a diffeent location. Obviously still in the same townish.
Where your units are “Normally kept” is defined as where parked when not in use and so is known as your operating centre. Your offices or depot need not be the same location. This info I believe must be included on your O licence application. I think that is what you are asking, sorry if it wasn’t.

No different to being a 1 truck owner driver, i have my truck in my operating centre but my house is my office which is 10 miles away
