Just out of curiosity, I was wondering if anyone knew of any companies in devon who would take on a cat c driver with little experience and pay for the driver to do cat c+e licence? I heard Gregory’s do/used to?
No.
I work for Iceland in the warehouse and have just got the “warehouse to wheels” programme, only I paid for the licences myself before hand.
I’ve been here since they came to Warrington 7 years ago. In that time they’ve paid for 1 person to do their CE but they were an existing employee and already had their C licence. They will be paying for a young lad to do both his licences in the coming year, but he’s an existing employee and his dads a driver here already.
To go to a company who you dont work for and expect them to pay for your C or CE is unheard of in this day and age. Best get saving the pennies I’m afraid.
Yeh I thought so when my dad said they used to ‘back when he started’ lol
Does it have to be Devon or would you consider re-locating?
I know they are not in Devon but I believe Stobarts train people up (Cue the abuse)
Failing that, you could always take the Queens shilling and go the military route
Why cant you pay for it yourself, its not that much to be fair…
It is when your unemployed
Gregory’s would take on a relatively inexperienced category C driver if he/she seemed enthusiastic but they don’t train drivers up to C+E, I doubt anyone in Devon does to be honest, there are plenty of experienced C+E drivers looking for work.
You’d probably be better off looking for Class C work, getting some experience, saving the pennies and aiming to fund C+E yourself sometime in 2014.
That’s what the plan is thanks
I get the Gregory’s newsletter and I know they were looking for Category C multidrop day drivers at Cullompton recently (Or rather Kay Transport were and they are part of Gregory’s) and I’m sure they wouldn’t mind if you phoned up and said your thing.
Even if they didn’t have anything at the moment, if you sounded keen to learn they would almost certainly send you an application form and keep your details on record, they would probably prefer someone like you to someone like me as an employee (I’m a Gregory’s subby) because you would be more willing to learn and adapt rather than bringing a lifetime’s habits to the job.
I can’t guarantee anything but it would definitely be worth the cost of a phone call.
That’s really good advice, thank you very much
Back in the day, when one could converse, chat with the forkie at carga\descarga, one could always find out useful nuggets about jobs etc, far more reliable than drivers heresay, lol.
Serious though would take the C job, when you deliverin\collectin places, have a chat with the bods in the office, sell yourself, so to speak.
Good luck mate, suspect you gonna need it, but then we all need lucky break sometimes
Gregorys are a good one to have a go for. I’ve done agency with them, nice bunch of people, good operation!
Best of luck bud

If your long term unemployed you may be able to get funding through the job center for your C&E licence, some people have managed it, it’s not easy and requires many many hours of ■■■■ kissing but it can be done.

A good idea in principle, however the reality is that the country is broke so they will do whatever it takes to get out of paying.
To get funding you have to have a written offer of a job (checkable by the jobcentre) subject to passing your test.
(I know because I was trying to get funding for a flt licence or plant operators licence)

As most jobs need filling within a very short timeframe then getting that offer on paper is going to be virtually impossible
If you have a friend who has a something to do with engaging drivers for their business then they might put together a job offer but then if that job gets filled before your training is done … not your fault … it WAS a genuine offer … walks away whistling …
I can get funding for 8 weeks work experience. So job centre will pay me so the employer doesn’t have to. Just means I have 8 weeks to sell myself
Is Bridgewater too far away ?

I know that, as Robert Wiseman, they took on my friends lad with a class 2. He now drives a Tanker on class 1, but I don’t know who paid for it…
Good Luck.
