A mister X seems to support the M42 overtaking ban according to an article in this magazine. Does anyone have any comments? One would assume he is a truck driver himself.

Nope, not a truck driver, but he runs a fair number of trucks on UK and Continental work. Can’t tell you any more than that I’m afraid or I’d have to kill you.

Yes but firstly,

Of course he’s gonna be in favour of it,He’s not the one who’s got to sit there at 40mph stuck behind a horse box/crane he’ll Be in his Jag/Merc/BMW in the outside lane.

Now back to the subject

Am I the only one who can see the irony in this scheme?

The government has just spent god knows (or maybe Dom does) millions puting in a very controversial scheme converting a section of the same road a few miles south into a running lane on the hard shoulder making an extra lane at peak times.

That smacks of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing having 2 opposing shemes on the same road.

I think the solution (assuming it is so busy) to impose a 50 mph variable speed restriction enforced by speed cameras on that stretch for all vehicles. That way anyone can use any lane and noone gets ‘held up’ …

At ups they say if someone rings in to disclose you are overtaking you will be fined £30.00

Don’t worry Jammy the Clash Know your Rights and put it into song.

The Clash:
Know your rights all three of them

Number 1
You have the right not to be killed
Murder is a crime!
Unless it was done by a
Policeman or aristocrat
Know your rights

And number 2
You have the right to food money
Providing of course you
Don’t mind a little
Investigation, humiliation
And if you cross your fingers
Rehabilitation

Know your rights
These are your rights
Wang

Know these rights

Number 3
You have the right to free
Speech as long as you’re not
Dumb enough to actually try it.

Know your rights
These are your rights
All three of ’em

Seems even more relevent today than it did when they wrote it. :frowning:

We all have the right to do as we are told.

Hopefully that’s what will happen, Lane one travels at a steady pace but lane 2 will be stop start because they will all do 80+ until a car doing 60 pulls into the lane leading to the shockwave effect creating stationary traffic.
Also maybe many of those who dwadle down the motorways will not use lane 1 believing it’s for HGV’s only.

like mr x says;

it’s only 3 miles for crying out loud, it’s hardly going to kill anyone is it?
or is it?
and what next?
if this works where will the next 3 mile section of truck overtaking bans be?
will it be just 3 miles next time or 30 miles?
will they start popping up all over the country like speed cameras?
whats the warning signage like?
is there enough of a warning for trucks already overtaking at less than 1 mph faster speed to get past the vehicle they are overtaking before they reach the ban area?
we all know where it’s heading, in 10 years there will be over 300 miles of overtaking restrictions on various motorways throughout the country.
i wonder how the foreigners will cope with it, there probaby won’t be any english drivers still doing the job by then so it won’t matter much to us.
i certainly won’t be driving then if it comes to that on our roads.
