trying to help a friend.
Her husband is at present driving a tour coach for the minmum wage.
This entails being out all week, carrying suitcases etc etc.
I assume that he gets his evening meals provided in the hotels but he apparently is allowed £5 per day for expenses. (I also guess that he gets free meals at “rest” stops etc.)
She tells me that this £5 is taxed.
Any coach drivers enlighten me as to the tax/expenses situation applicable to this kind of work?
The £5 is for your “out of pocket” expenses and is not taxed. It’s for newspapers, calls home, beer, chocolate etc.
Cheers
Paul
When I was employed I would get about £15 a day+night when working away. This is to cover expenses so is non taxable.
He can claim a lot more than that. A lot of coach drivers are self employed so get him to ask any.
Meals are usually included at hotels, though not always.
Depending on the length of the shift he can claim £5 or £10 plus £10 over night allowance for being away from home.
He can claim 47p per mile to and from the yard (Although remember, he ‘works for lots of coach companies’ and ‘doesn’t always go to this yard’)
Although he should by the rule of the thumb get £1.50 to £2 per person, per day tip for keeping the bus clean and doing luggage etc.
I’d advise against an hourly rate if he can and ask for a fixed rate, normally £65 per day plus £10 over night.
When I was on coaches I got £65 per day and would easily walk away with £122 a day tip (61 seater) and over the week would earn £1120 ish. And that’s not ■■■■■■■■.
Thanks for the helpful info, I will certainly pass it on to my friends.
Wonder if he’s as willing to declare the £1,000s he gets a year in tips as he is to claim a fiver a day in expenses.
Yes, he does declare the tips…or so I am told

of course he does …just like I would
To be honest I have no reason to think he is lying
His wife, who was the one asking me questions, told me straight away that he does declare tips for tax.
me, like you, would say nothing

Blimey what work were you doing for tips like that?! I never managed that much regularly! Don’t take this the wrong way, I’m not saying your lying just interested.

having been on a few (day) tours ,if the driver was knowledgeable about the area you were travelling through and visiting ,and he was entertaining in his “chat” , it wasn`t uncommon for the people on the coach to have a whip round that didn’t contain coins (£5/£10 notes) .multiply that by the number of passengers x number of tours per week ■■? the driver would be getting more (tax free ■■) in tips than was being paid .

I dont know anything about coaches but use to work with someone who use to do them tours to france etc and said the wage was crap but could earn really good money in tips… Seems like a decent job if you like people… Think i’d get worried about getting lost with 50 or so people sitting behind me lol…

If the 50 or so bodies behind sat behind you had no idea where they were either then you’re not lost, you are merely giving them “a tour”!
Trafalgar mate, top end of the market tours wise.
Thought I had you on Facebook Luke so you could have seen a the coach rubbish I post?
