hiya,
Remember when working for Bowkers in the 60s got “volunteered” to help
move Billy Smarts circus from Rochdale to Blackburn I think the pay was a
tenner and free tickets good money for a couple of hours work in those days
here’s the thing that got me wondering was when alighting from the mini bus
at the collection point the instruction was to find “Norman” (our clown and also
transport manager), there was two of us with wag and drag experience so were
allocated old octopus’s pulling two trailers, often wonder what would have happened
had I had to reverse it at the new site Ewood Park, most likely would have finished
up in a knot my trailer boy was an Arab tightrope walker who ladeled copious amounts
of old engine oil into what had been a Leyland 600 engine at one time, it was the
longest, dirtiest and smokiest trip I’ve ever done, could have strangled that bleedin
Norman but never saw him again after the job was done, and George a coloured guy
who arranged the drivers for B S and was yard foreman at Bowkers seemed never to
be around when I was for weeks after I think someone had put it round I was gunning
for him, could easily have been up for two murders in those days.
PS this job was done in our own time one Saturday evening, nothing to do with Bowkers.
thanks harry,long retired.

Harry I helped put up a circus tent, when I was a young lad   down at Midsummer meadow on the Bedford road, it must have been 1952/3.

hiya,
Ah’ yes 52/53 I too was capable of making tents in those days,

hiya,
Yep vultures, buzzards, hawks and the odd gannet have shown up in
my life but I’ve also been associated with love birds and birds of paradise,
now that’s a bit of variety, and variety is the spice of life, or that’s what
I’m led to believe, and yes I’d do it all over again.
thanks harry, long retired.

I think you can still get the “eels” in the East end Larry, years ago when I was on the Octopus at Brady’s we used to go into a boozer, called the Smiths Arms, when we digged in Llansamlet near Swansea and they always had a “washing up” sized bowl of local cockles on the bar,I can’t recall how much a dessert dishful was but I always had some.Well one night there wasn’t two dishes left so the landlord say’s here Lad have all thats left in the big dish!!! There must have been a bad one in among them,ye buggers, was I ill next day,I could ■■■■■ through the eye of a needle at 100 paces!! My mate on the motor thought it was hilarious, words like “you greedy ■■■■■■■■ serves you right!!! I gave them a miss for a week or two,but I soon relented and carried on enjoying them, they sure were tasty!! I believe the term is “cockled” if you get a bad one !! Cheers Dennis.

Aye I remember quite some years ago eating some Green Lippers, & enjoyed them at the time, but the next day I was ill, so I stayed off them for a while, I have them once a week now as a starter & still enjoy them, Regards Larry.

Aye up lad,   what the hell is green lippers  I love and eaten most sea food Larry, I still give it a hammering if I see a stall, Lobsters, king prawns & shrimps, mussels, cockles, clams, scallops, razor fish, and of course winkles, I keep asking for them, for there is nothing better than a winkle sandwich,   but they don’t seem to be around these days, they have them in Ireland, I have collected them by the bucket full, but they never bother with them. :frowning: :frowning: :frowning: Now on to Dennis delight, I do not like them, I have tried a few times, but give me stewed eels and gravey and a dollop of mash potato, I was in heaven as a young boy.

green lippers are mussels a delicacy in New Zealand an extract from
them is said to be an aid in the cure of cancer, now go on Nosser fill
yer boots they’re very tasty but quite expensive, and with you’re dosh
only a drop in the Ocean,  only a drop in the ocean now that’s
funny, OK it’s not but I did try.
thanks harry, long retired.

Harry you are such a trier,   I think I heard a rumour that a selector for the rugby union wants you to play for the Old Etonians, :astonished: :astonished: :astonished: they have heard about your drinking,   so you position is left inside the bar.      Also I have had some of those New Zealand mussels, they was very large, and a slightly different colour, :astonished: :astonished: :astonished: but they tasted ok and went down well, I had a couple of boxes from Morrison’s, but not seen any more for a couple of years, wife said have them at christmas time, when we used our stamps up.
