Clitheroe tarmac & horrocksford hauliers past & present

john i:
Hello chaps,
Haven’t been on here for ages I’ve been flat out with the night work doing inter-county tar deliveries to the various dual carriageways and motorways etc, been working out of bankfield, Clitheroe recently at night and so proud to actually take loads out of there just like I did with my dad back in the 70’s when I was at school and the memories of wagons and drivers back then that people talk about now just come back to me like it was yesterday, I’m just happy to be taking part in working out of there it’s like I’ve gone full circle after driving all over the country.
Anyway there is a 3rd vehicle now to go with the foden and the Daf and will put a photo on here soon when she’s done.

Keep up the good work John i. I take it Laughfarge rang you up to cover the tonnage?? They cant get enough Owner driver Ducks to cover the work because they have all jacked it in. Distribution have been ringing all over the place for wagons :open_mouth: Where have you been running to?? Have a good xmas pal and go stuff the Ducks.

Been going to Immingham, M1 in derbyshire, A1 up north east, M74 and scarborough all in the Foden and the Foden has loved every minute of it, according to the fuel used she’s been returning on average 9.7mpg over a typical 6 night working week mostly on dual carriageways and motorways and when I get to the job I don’t leave her ticking over but switch off the big cat and save what you can when you can, I don’t drive her hard and enjoy driving her every time I’m on duty.

No not all out of Clitheroe, a lesson in business is never to keep all your eggs in 1 basket and be prepared to go to the work because it doesn’t always come to you. Priority is the wagon must be loaded to deliver to the exact plant that you’re working out of that same night and treat the staff and drivers that work there in a way that you in turn expect to be treated and on that principle alone you can work anywhere and enjoy doing the shift and wherever I have worked out of I’ve never had any problems with anybody.

Sounds like Bankfield is go again. :open_mouth: :unamused:

Could of been running out of Sandside quarry, there’s a lot of work about , the Heysham link road  . Since Lafarge went in with Tarmac, OD,s (Ducks) have to follow the work around the country not stay in a certain place ie Bankfield :unamused: on top of rate cuts, and the night/ weekend rate cut, lots of Ducks have jacked it in. So there’s a massive shortage trucks :open_mouth: and people like Johni are getting plenty of work(and rightly so)!!! IMO non LafTar trucks get better looked after than Ducks :unamused: Fill ya boots John

Hi chaps, yeah you will have seen the foden up near milnthorpe my dad drives her during the day I don’t know where he would have been going, the daf was up there as well somewhere, I just do nights and any weekend work tacho hours allowing.
Regarding following the work that’s not a problem to us, I learned a lesson from an international company I used to work for before I started helping my brother and dad out with the tippers, there is lots of work coming from Turkey so they got there sales team to source loads etc going near them parts and then got the work back into UK and never looked back, remember what I said before ’ You’ve got to be prepared to go to the work because it doesn’t always come to you ’ but the vehicle has to be loaded into the area that you are working from that night and the simple fact that you have proved to be reliable will ensure you get plenty of work. No 3 wagon is about to go on the road and she’s gonna look real nice.

Has the night work rate increased now that tarmac/lafart need transport? We used to get rate and a half for night and Sunday work, previously under Tilcon it was rate and threequarters so a few jacked in doing it when Tarmac lowered it! I did plenty of nights but the only problem was that, working for a private haulier, I was behind all the tarmac O/D’s (some even came up to Derbyshire from Shrewsbury!) and might only get one load if the tonnage was dropped so the truck and me stood down a days work for only one load at night. :imp: RMC/Cemex had a better system, if you were booked for two loads you were paid for two even if you dropped a load. That was good because again I would be loaded behind their own trucks but sometimes would be home before they loaded their second load if the tonnage was cut, one load done and paid for two.

Pete.

My understanding about the rates are that nights and any Sunday work WAS payed at Rate and a half. Tar loads capped to 20 tons,But this is now payed at normal rates? and if you ran from say Clitheroe to Sandside for night work without a load up Ducks got £60 But if you are BLUE EYES :unamused: and got a dust out of Arcow up then the £60 was dropped? I also believe that Laughtar are so short of trucks that they are offering a guaranteed amount of money to work? IE :- Plants at Cross Green and Sheffield  no TRUCKS??

It was always and I dare say it is a big problem for o.ds,the having to wait behind tarmacs own even if you went in first,o.k. when the work was plentyfull. We found it much easier to buy the materials from them and sell them on ourselves, the rates they paid in the 70s and 80s hardly covered truck and driver costs but kept you out of trouble if things were quiet. As for £60 a load from Clitheroe to Sandside well? Sounds like things haven,t improved at all. :open_mouth: :frowning: :unamused:

Hi Shirtbox2003 The £60 is payed OR Was payed to the ODs if they went up empty from Clitheroe :open_mouth: and i think the same amount if they run to Cross Green empty? :unamused:

Still hardly covers fuel and wages though. :open_mouth: :unamused:
