Class C test vs Class C1 Test

Hi guys, just a quick question, What is difference between the C1 and C test other than gaining the appropriate category when finished.

see I am looking to get my C1 at least as I am looking to become a paramedic and having the catagory already on there is better to have when applying.

see I am looking to book lessons soon, and if the tests are the same, do you think I should go for the full class c?

Some training schools use a large 5 or 6 tonne VAN for the C1 test which makes it easier for many people

If only given the choice of a 7.5 tonner or an 18 tonner then take the 18 tonner and go for C because the only real difference will be the gearbox

Ahh now that is interesting! Thanks for your advice! is it like the car test where by the truck you train in, is the truck you do your test in, if so then I will go by what the school has to offer is the test criteria is the same!

Yes it is

The training is usually over 3 4 or 5 days with the test on the last day - an assessment will determine what you need
Those days will either be half days of 1 to 1 or full days of 2 to 1
please do not try full days of 1 to 1 unless you are used to concentrating hard whilst driving for very long periods

PS - usually 5 days for truck but often 3 or 4 for VAN

that is great advice thank you! I will in that case be sure to book half day sessions!

Which part of UK are you looking to train in?

I am looking to train in Liverpool some time in the new year

LGV initial driver cpc not required if this is for purely driving NHS ambulances

That is true, but up until I get a job as a paramedic I may well use the licence in other ways (possible driving for my current employers for example)

but my main reason to get it is indeed to make me stand out for a paramedic application

You do right to get C1 or C on your licence before your application goes in. The criteria varies according to where you are in the country - but it can never go against you and you’ll have do it at some time.

My advice, for what it’s worth, is to go for C1 rather than C. It’s close to 2 thirds the price for starters. You’ll never get any benefit from having C unless you start working as a truck driver - and to do so you will need driver cpc (around £300). So you’re wasting the difference in price between C and C1 (IRO £500) + a further £300 or thereabouts for cpc that you dont need as a paramedic.

Look around for a trainer with a Sprinter or Daily type van. There is absolutely no point in learning in a 7.5 tonner that you have no intention of driving. But a Sprinter/Daily van is pretty well what you will end up driving.

So I’ve just saved you about £800!! Happy Christmas!! Pete
PS It’s this sort of honesty that stops me becoming a rich man! ■■■■!

In that case you might as well get initial LGV DCPC by doing modules 2 and 4

Re D2 form - tick the C & D categories only because then the medical will cover you for everything

Do the maths carefully. Will you earn £800 driving in that period? (About £1200 before tax) Bear in mind that the pass rate on C1 is substantially higher than C as it’s quite a bit easier. So little chance of having to pay for retests. Why have the stress of C when all you need is C1?

Good luck, Pete

Is the driving for your current employer in a C1 vehicle?

its both c and c1… large truck or large van, but mainly large van so mainly c1

It should not be but check carefully when the licence comes back from DVLA because sometimes only the lower categories have been stated
