Class 1 wagon&Drag

Hi everyone,
quick question around Class 1 training in a wagon&Drag, if I pass in one do I have to do any kind of conversion course to drive an Arctic?
Thanks in anticipation.

No. U will get both stamps.

You may wish to do a few hours with a driving school in an artic for your own benefit.

Pass on w+d, you get a full CE licence. But it’s best to have a couple of hours on an artic before you go for an artic job.

Some folks consider it best to go straight to artic.

Why not train in a proper artic like one of Volvo FH Globetrotters? Do you really want to pass driving a drawbar? That isn’t a proper truck!

LOL! They were proper enough when you were running them!

For us, we continue to run artic and w+d. Let the customer decide.

You are correct Sir…artic and trailer units out weight the wagon and drags on the UK roads by miles… cant see the point in training someone to drive W&D when they just gonna be applying for work on artic’s… but its that BS of making it easy for them to pass…

Why isn’t a proper truck? The DVSA who make the rules think it is and as Pete mentioned the drawbar combination you use to train with, it served you well for many years or have you forgot about that?

I agree you have superb training trucks which you deserve to be proud of, but come on don’t try and be little other trainers for what combination they choose to train with.

I think it would be the opposite if you pass in an artic you would need training to reverse a w&d and if you pass in w&d reversing an artic would be a piece of cake. Just my opinion , I dont know the answers !

Considering your a reputable training company that’s a real unprofessional, belittling and condescending statement, I really expected better.
And as others have commented you used to train in W&D; hippocricy only goes so far!

I agree with you Victa, from what I’ve researched people tend to be of the opinion that passing in W&D gives you better all round skills and converting to Arctic is considered straight forward; it also improves your employability, but that’s just my opinion.
I’m looking forward to my training in W&D with Paul at Elmet then I’ll book a couple of hours training in an Arctic, hopefully with Peter Smyth.

Class 1 wagon&Drag

They are two separate things

HGV class 1 was phased out in the early 90s and referred to artics only

LGV C+E refers to any rigid including an artic unit that is towing a trailer over 750 kgs MAM

Putting the two terms together (class 1 and W&D) does not now make sense

I sat my C+E in a wagon and drag. I have seen it said on here that it is the “easy option”. In one respect it may have been as I was more used to driving the truck (manual 4 over 4). However, all the instructors I have spoken to reckon when it comes to the reversing that the artic is much easier. I haven’t driven an artic yet but I did manage to have a few goes of coupling/uncoupling one just before my module 4 test. Compared to the wagon and drag the artic was a doddle to hitch up. It took three attempts on my test to get the pin to drop. Typical when it did it first time every time in my training. I daresay there’s pros and cons to both but I don’t feel I lost out on anything by doing my test in a wagon and drag.

Passed in W&D

Next bendy wagon I drove was an artic. The only difference being it bends near the front rather than the Middle.

Go for it.
