Clarification please

Can anyone clarify what the difference between “C” and “C1” is please ?
Or “C1 + E” and “C + E”

I feel like every time i get my head around it someone tells me something different.

My goal is to drive the largest articulated truck possible.
As per previous posts i have obtained my LGV CAT C Theory and Haz Perception, and have a driving license pre 1995 with “grandfather rights”
I have a digital tacho card and am about to sit “Module 2 case studies next week”

I believe this means I have to do a practical training and practical “C” test, and once i get that i can then upgrade it to C + E .

Am I correct ?
Where does “C1” come into it.

Yours confusedly.

C1 is up to 7.5t

C1 = rigid up to 7.5 tonnes GVW with max 750 kg trailer
C1+E = rigid up to 7.5 tonnes GVW with trailer
C = any size GVW rigid (including artic unit) with max 750kg trailer
C+E = any size rigid GVW (including artic unit) with trailer

Those can be restricted if they have certain codes with them

Easy way to remember is this: rigid lorry is C. Add E for a trailer. And C1 is “little one”. So C1 + E is a little lorry with a trailer.

This may or may not help.

All the best, Pete

Thanks for this - This is actually the best way to describe it !

So you should have C1 grandfather rights. So providing you have a tacho card and up-to-date dcpc you can drive a C1 7.5T for hire or reward. Once you have done mod 2 and then Mod 4 that will give you five years cpc and a dcpc card. Then to drive owt bigger you need your Cat C test and another to do tow anything bigger than 750kg with you Cat C or C1 lorry. Good luck

You don’t need Mod 2 and Mod 4 to get your Class 1 (C+E)) or 2 (C) entitlement, only to drive professionally when you have it.
But with your pre-1997 licence and acquired rights for 7.5T (C1) you have the choice to do either Mod 2 & 4 OR 35 hours DCPC in order to drive professionally. People can fail Mod 2 & 4, you can’t fail 35 hours of periodic training.
