City Link

bxxxxy glad I never went with them in my own van now

No doubt venture capitalists and asset strippers will cherry pick any viable parts of the business directors will walk off with big payoffs and normal workers and small creditors will be left with nothing

I have a good friend that has (had) a few on there doing a night trunk. Not good news at all.

Des Hartley from Birstall does / did quite a bit of work for City Link lots of night trunking

Strange, given the significant rise in internet shopping, that a parcel delivery business cannot survive. I would have expected that there is more and more demand out there, so there should be plenty of business to share around between the different delivery companies. Is this really about the competition, or is it more about the way the business was managed…

Not at all surprised, as others have said they’ve been losing money hand over fist since 2007 and after the botched takeover of Target Express they lost some major customers.

moomooland:
Rentokil acquired City Link in 2006, but City Link have lost money since 2007 year on year, including £26m in 2012 alone.

Rentokil Initial owned City Link from 1993 and it was branded as “Initial City Link” between 1997 and 2006.

Sad news for all the drivers at City link, gone bust, thought they were doing OK, I did some for them couple of years ago at Christmas, sad tidings at this time of year.

The drivers had been working under notice or at least informed for around a year or two now when Mark Thompson etc took over most of the transport, the majority of Citylink drivers have moved on or were offered to move over under toupe at that time. I always wondered how they made money as the freight was mostly large bulky items and the general public couldn’t post, you’d need an account to use them.

There’s not going to be a lot left after the hyenas get their cut, I don’t believe they actually own a lot.

It was always rammed when I would take a 7.5ton down to Coventry in the evenings.

Being just a “van driver.” I have worked at every one of the parcel companies at some point. City Link were by far the worst and most disorganized of them all. FACT!

Just goes to show that no ones job is safe, to much competition out there with other named companies and other means of transporting parcels and goods… i.e. Uship…and various there online sites…a lot of wanna be delivery drivers out there…
But 7 years of flogging a dead horse I ask ya… If you bought a company for £1 back in you would have expected to restructure and be turning a profit within 3 years or shut up shop… and before anyone else says about bad timing … no surprise there either, Ive know quite a few companies that make ppl redundant days before Xmas…

It is bad for the staff with an uncertain look to the new year, never know whats around the corner … incorporated with another parcel giant with some jobs losses… just have to wait and watch this space

I’ve been using them for my ebay stuff for years, through parcel monkey, no problems at all with them

FACT!

Whenever I see that in a post or hear it in a drivers waiting room its usually a sign that everything they said was a load of codswallop.

Being a night trunk driver so getting to see what goes on at both the depot and the hub, Citylink were no better or worse than most of them. Certainly their hub was more organised than the shambles APC is but nowhere near that of Geopost (Parceline/Interlink/DPD). The depots worked the same as every other parcel company - 2-3 hrs of chaos with parcels coming out of the decker in random order to be sorted out into runs on the floor before being loaded into the back of the respective van for delivery.

I can’t see there being many tangible assets within this firm, no doubt the previous owners/directors bought these off the firm back in the day (at a good rate/below market prices I must add) and leased them back to the firm… securing the fate of the company in the future when cash flows go a bit sour.

Surprised they haven’t blamed it on Amazon launching their own parcel company like Royal Mail did.

The Coventry hub takes in shed loads of deckers every night, if it goes, then there is going to be a lot of drivers out of a job.
