Hello Guys I remember poplar motors because my dad was a driver there, he worked on the containers with seatrain going up to greenock if i remember rightly we used to stop at a truck stop in crawford.
hayday:
Chris Webb:
I can’t see a mention of Poplar Motor Transport from Lymm, they were a biggish outfit, what happened to them?Errr,Lymm is still in Cheshire isn’t it?
Pops was a massive haulier from around the cafe of the same name. They must have been going well before I was born ('64) and their motors always appear in the old clippings and mags. I seem to recall some time in the 70’s they were involved in the container business with what turned out to be a rather dodgy (alleged New York mafia) company called Seatrain. I think when they went under, a good few went with them, but not sure if Pops did.
Hi Glenmore, what was your dads name,? I worked at pops in the 70’s
HI petecud
My Dads name was Jimmy Caveney.

Posted this Question on another thread but Question for the older ones,I grew up in Culcheth near Warrington in the next village which was Croft was a Shell garage owned by the Birchall Family can anyone remember the name of the Haulage company that was behind there. Its a housing estate these days , here,s a clue cream colored tippers
don’t remember the firm but was the garage called the Smithy or something similar? Across the road and over the fields there was a guy called Howard Bibby who ran a small mixed bag fleet (poss F86’s?) His son James now runs a HGV repair firm (I went to tech college with him)

No sorry to say your in Culcheth got the name of the garage right, So a couple of clues, 1. It was in Croft 2. Cream coloured tipper trucks 3. The garage was a shell gararge 4. Its a housing Estate now. Come on your older guys put your thinking caps on, can you believe that garage was a Smithy when i first lived in Culcheth ( 1960 )
Bit before I migrated into the area but I do recall them running a very smart fleet of A-series ERFs. Are they still in business or have they gone the way of so many others?
