There’s an article in this week’s Daily Mail about the Bay Bridge. Apparently it is so scary that 8,500 drivers pay a company to drive them over the bridge in their own car because they are too scared to do it themselves Is it really that bad or is it just another case of driving while being American?
It’s a strange thing. You drive along a bridge only a few feet above the bay for a mile or so, then onto a small man made island that opens up into a tunnel. The tunnel worries me more than the bridge as it starts half way across the bay and a big wave would flood it quite easily.
There’s a scarier bridge on I-95 as you are about to leave Maryland going northbound, or enter going south, obviously, it is quite high and there’s only a 2’ wall at the edge of the roadway, it’s pretty windy up there at times. I’ve had a sphincter twitch on there a few times, fortunately it’s not that long.
There are two Chesapeake Bay bridges …
There’s the Chesapeake Bay gridge … 5 miles long and very high at the apex.
The Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnel which I thing Mark is refering to is a strange set up, it’s built low then there are islands where you enter a tunnel, these tunnels are for ships to pass through.
The Delaware memorial bridge (Mark mentions) links Delaware with New Jersey, quite high and scary.
Delaware memorial bridge.
Heres a series from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnels.
and here are some of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, which is further up nearer Washington DC and basically cuts out the nonsense that is Baltimore.

I spend half my time aiming my camera at something. Imagine what some of the jobsworths over on the UK forum would say, I mean, not having both hands on the wheel at all times! Glad you like the photos. Those two bridges are my favourite in North America so far.
I didn’t mean the Deleware bridge, the one after the first scale as you cross into Maryland heading south is the one I didn’t fancy.
That Deleware Memorial Bridge is high for sure. The Chesapeake Bridge is nothing special, that’s why I mentioned the bridge/tunnel combo, I could believe people were scared of that.
I can’t understand it either ? unless it’s a fear of tunnels. The Bay bridge is scary, as you can see in the bottom few of Robins photo’s, there was a truck blew on it’s side a few weeks back and the woman driver had to be rescued by hanging on a harness.
It’s the high Bay bridge they are talking about, not the one with the tunnels. Apparently there are 4 firms making a good living out of driving people over it in their own cars. Some of the scared drivers sit in the back with a blanket over their head so they can’t see the sea passing by
They are paying 25 dollars each way for the priviledge and some of them are commuting so that’s 50 dollars per day. Obviously more money than sense.
I must add the rider that this is from the Daily Mail, so accuracy is not their first concern
Great photos Robin. Not done that route but one of the guys I spoke to said its a must great views

Thanks. The longer one with the tunnels is impressive purely for its engineering value. They had to build it with two sets of tunnels as they were not allowed to build a bridge that could be sabotaged and fall in to the shipping channel. This is due to the main Atlantic fleet of the US navy being based in Norfolk, Virginia inland of the bridge/tunnels.
The Bay Bridge itself, though shorter is far more impressive a bridge as you drive over it, especially on a clear sunny day. I’ve been over it a few times in high winds with a light load and its not so impressive then! If I’m heading south down the east coast I always use it as it misses out Baltimore and half of DC and there are no tolls south bound. Its a few miles longer going that way but more enjoyable with less traffic.
tipped in New York once had to reload in VA but they wouldnt route me over the bridge i had to go the main road way was a pain for sure

Are they that specific in telling you what way to go?
