Cheap in cab camera....with a difference

Just watched Top Gear’s poor cousin, 5th Gear, and on it they did the top 5 apps for phones, and one was called Witness, which turns your smart phone into a camera for 69p.

It measures all the usual bumpf that the dearer cameras do, like lateral forces, heading, lat and long, time, date etc.

it seems to get mixed reviews on websites, but for 69p…

Use it all the time, brilliant.

Does it still record if a call comes in?

Ken.

If you have an Android phone, go to the Googleplay store and download a free app called Dailyroads, I’ve been using it for a while, it’s good…

Def got to get this app. Looks brilliant.

I’ll check that out.

Although the Witness one looks good, I live in Yorkshire and don’t want to pay for it if necessary.

And. Been using a very similar app from Android for about 3 yrs now.

Ken.

I have been using this app for some time.

It wont record if a call comes in.

I have a second iphone set up just to record so dont worry about calls coming in.

Well worth the 69p price tag.

Just downloaded Dailyroads, and so far it looks good.

dailyroads seems ok, just used it for pics at mo got it taking 2.5mb pics every 2mins this morning from lancaster to grangemouth… some decent pics thats using a galaxy note bluetacked to center of window put phone on airline mode thou as i think it stops working if u get a call not sure bout texts

The android apps are OK, but none of them seem to stamp any telematary onto any saved video. It shows speed, location etc on the screen when the app is running, but apparently the technology isn’t available on android (god knows why) to stamp it onto any saved images. Therefore despite having good images of any incidents, there’s no evidence you weren’t speeding etc.

I found Dailyroads sucked the battery dry (even with the charger plugged in). I currently use AutoBoy Blackbox. It can be used with your phone in landscape or portrait (unlike dailyroads). It also doesn’t try and focus on the wipers when they’re switched on unlike other black box apps I’ve tried.

just looked at daily roads and u can pay $4.99 a month to get the datestamp etc… strange it shows it on the phone but not when the file is on my pc… still suppes they have to get some money off it somehow… decent for pics thou…

Can you still play music from your iPhone when recording?
Can you still have the phone on charge when recording?
What if something happens at a specific time in the journey that you want to save and edit and when do you do that, straight away or wait until you finish your shift?

Do you record on these constantly and just delete at the end of the drive if no problems? Or are they smart where they auto record at a bump or any sudden movements?

Auto boy blackbox is what I use on my Android. Doesn’t crash like daily roads or ■■■■ the buttery dry. The phone still works and I can play music whilst it’s running.

And it’s free.

I use the witness app on a spare iphone which records constantly all day. It records 10x 6 minute segments so an hour in total, then it records over the first segmant and so on.

If something happens on your trip that you want to keep then you can press the save button on the screen and it will save the last and current 6 min segment for later use/editing.

You cant play music and use the app but you can charge the phone whilst recording which is advisable as it zaps your battery.

It will stop recording if a call comes in.

It will also overlay your posistion and current speed.

I’m going to get it, cheers mate. How do you mount it so it doesn’t fall over??

I use DRV but like others have said it pummels the battery even with a 3 amp charger connected.

All I have is a cheap phone holder stuck in the centre of the windscreen just above the wiper blade.
