Channel Tunnel in a HGV Calais-Folkestone

I’m not really a big fan of driving videos it’s just not my thing, but this popped up in my Youtube recommendations and I thought it might be helpful for anyone who wants to do continental work and possibly interesting for anyone else.

How to; Channel Tunnel in a HGV Calais-Folkestone

I haven’t watched many of this blokes videos but he seems down to earth so anyone who likes this sort of stuff may want to check out his channel.

For clarity I’m not in anyway connected with this Youtuber or his channel, I just thought it may be of interest to some people on this board.

Being a sad git i watched both his videos How come the fench side has an xray machine that is just a couple of plates that you drive between and the uk side is a whole shed and you have to go and wait in a waiting room. Is it older style xray therefore not safe or just british h&s rubbish

The “couple of plates” he calls an X-Ray, on the run into the first booths, arent an X-Ray. They are sensors of some description, but Im not sure what.

The French side does have an X-Ray machine off to the right hand side of the Customs booths. Those told to do a loop around there and, because it is x-rays you do need to get of the cab while the scanner part goes over the 2 vehicles it takes at a time.

Ignore me

Hi Tachograph , interesting to watch the video ,not a lot has changed, the company i worked for used it a soon as we could 1994 the driver seating has changed,it was like a table and 2 drivers each side and you could eat your meal that was free.

You could go along inside the engine to the drivers cab and stand behind him [escorted by staff] the tunnel is very up and down like mini hills there are gradient markers telling the driver up or down just like the old railway markers, after 10 mins you would change around it looked a very boring job.
Once we were very used to using it i would watch the FORIGEN drivers which bus they used once picked up and if going back to the truck make sure they were on the right bus as they had not a glue it was all very new, even some uk drivers just got on any bus and it did cause big delays.

you were able to get your 45 min break.,there were many drivers blew tyres getting on as the video shown esp the “left hookers” also English drivers, there were permeant tyre fittings vans both ends kept very busy ,yes it took a while to get confident i will admit… later on when i drove left hand drive road trains for Bowker’s it was just as easy.

Also if you were kept waiting on top of the ramp to go down there were vans that came round and gave you a meal and no one asked for the cutlery and plates back all was stamped with the euro tunnel logo [le shuttle ] i had a few sets now been distributed to my family .

When i was on ACH, there was a driver a south African or Rhodesian he worked on the tunnel with the front batching gang and all the concrete came along the rail track, he drove the little engine ,the concrete was strapped down with blue straps they used to cut them off because they never knew how to un do the clasp we all know, he stopped them cutting them and undone the straps and kept them made a killing.

last time i used the tunnel was 2002 when the probing trailers with CO2 probes started and they had 1 mobile x-ray Calais end. the migrant prob was just starting we were all aware of it. DBP.

Those plates you drive through at Coquelles are Heartbeat sensors.

I have heard that said before.
How they detect heartbeats inside a fridge trailer, travelling past on a diesel lorry, at 30kph is…something I would be interested in hearing more about.
You got any more info on them?

I presume the snack van by the offices on the English side is long gone ?
Used to get a bap and wait until scanner was full and drive straight into the lanes

Brought back many memories of my time doing European work.

The heartbeat sensors are in the sheds they pull you into, mostly it boxes and fridges

I haven’t watched…

The video. From my faded memory, French plod have a mobile weighbridge in a van. It was two plates that you slowly drove over and then received either, your telling off or free pass home.

Cheers.
No technical details (I guess that be too helpful for evading detection!)
